BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 19, 2018) –
Sabrina Hebding and
Kaitlin Cockroft combined to post the fourth consecutive shutout to start the season for the Webber International University softball team as the Warriors defeated Cincinnati Christian University 2-0 on Monday on
Nancy Nichols Field.
In addition to the shutout win streak, the Warriors' streak of scoreless innings to start the season moved to 26. A big part of this streak has been Hebding, who pitched the first complete game shutout of her career last week on Tuesday, February 13, and pitched a scoreless inning on Saturday, February 17. On Monday, Hebding went six innings while allowing only four hits and two walks to move to 2-0 on the season, and then Cockcroft earned the first save of her career with a scoreless seventh inning.
Once again,
Laura Borders provided all the punch the Warrior's offense would need as she came up to bat first-pitch swinging and smashed her third home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Borders had a perfect game at the plate as she also drew two walks in her first two at bats before the homer, and added a stolen base on the day as well.
In the top of the sixth, CCU tried to answer Borders' bomb, smacking a leadoff double on the first pitch of the inning, but Hebding remained in control and stranded the Eagles' runner on third.
Webber (4-0) added an insurance run in the next half inning as
Meghan Lindell notched her second hit of the game with a leadoff double, and then pinch runner
Anna Schutzler scored on a pinch hit single to right field by
Samantha Rolfe.
Game two of Monday's originally scheduled doubleheader was suspended due to darkness after eight innings with a score of 11-11. This game will resume on Tuesday, February 20, at 11 a.m. while games three and four of the Warriors' series with the Eagles will follow.
