BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 20, 2018) – After the second game of the four game series was suspended on Monday, February 19, due to darkness, the Webber International University softball team and the Cincinnati Christian University Eagles completed three games on Tuesday to finish off the series. The suspended game finished with a 15-13 victory for the Eagles in 11 innings while the Warriors took game three of the series 3-0 and fell in the finale by a tight score of 3-2.
After Monday's exciting eighth inning during game two in which both teams put up six runs, play resumed on Tuesday as Webber (5-2) and Cincinnati Christian (2-4) both added runs in the ninth and 10th innings before the Eagles pushed across two unearned runs in the top of the 11th and held the Warriors scoreless in the bottom half.
It was the first loss of the season for the Warriors, who saw their streak of 28.1 scoreless innings pitched to start the season end during Monday's portion of the game.
Seniors
Laura Borders,
Meghan Lindell and
Megan Isoba each led the Warriors with two hits while Lindell brought in an impressive five runs batted in and Borders scored four times.
In the circle,
Stephanie Johnson and
Kylee Crews each made their collegiate debuts while
Dariyen Moss made her season debut.
Despite the multitude of runs, each of the final four runs of the game for CCU were unearned while only two of Webber's 13 runs were earned. Additionally, each team scored more runs than it had hits as the two teams combined for 16 walks, 10 errors and four hit by pitches.
In game three of the series, Webber came out strong behind yet another shutout performance from the Webber pitching staff. Sophomore
Raven White (3-0) extended her streak of scoreless innings to start the season to 15 innings while the game also represented the fifth shutout in the first six games of the season for the Warriors.
White finished with four innings of one-hit ball while Johnson came on to finish off the final three innings allowing only one hit herself and earning the first save of her career.
Just like in her first outing of the season against Stratford University on February 13, White did not need much run support to earn the victory as Borders scored
Ka'Deisha McCowen with an RBI single to left in the first inning, and then Lindell was hit by a pitch in the third inning to bring in
Alyssa Rodriguez, who had an RBI herself with a sacrifice fly to center to bring in
Anna Schutzler in the fourth.
In the final game of the series, the third game of the day, Webber scored twice to answer runs by CCU in the third and sixth innings, but was done in by a first inning in which the Eagles scored a two-out run against Webber's starter,
Kaitlin Cockroft (0-2). Similarly to her effective long relief in game three, Johnson again returned to pitch in game four and finished off the final 4.2 innings allowing three hits and one run.
Webber will play the University of Western Ontario in two developmental games on Thursday, February 22, at home before starting conference action against No. 16 Southeastern University on Saturday, February 24, in Lakeland, Florida.
