HATTIESBURG, Miss. (February 16, 2018) – The No. 25 Webber International University baseball team rebounded after a tough extra-inning loss against the sixth-ranked team in the country to take down the NAIA's 20th-ranked team in seven innings on Friday at Milton Wheeler Field in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Warriors battled the host school, No. 6 William Carey University, to extra innings before falling 6-5 in the 11th, and then Webber responded with a 7-1 win over No. 20 Campbellsville University during a neutral field matchup in the second game.
In the win against Campbellsville, left-hander
Doug Pearl (1-0) made his first start of the season and got over a leadoff home run in the first inning, finishing with seven strong innings of three-hit baseball with only one walk and six strikeouts for the first complete game of his career as a Warrior.
Offensively, Webber exploded for 12 hits and stole five bases to back Pearl's effort on the mound, and scored three runs in the top of the second to compensate for the Tigers' quick home run in the previous half inning.
Brett Kaminski led the way with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate while bringing in three runs batted in, scoring twice and smacking his first career home run.
Tyree Austin and
Garrett Martin both added two hits, an RBI and a run while Martin stole two bases and Austin added another.
Despite the outcome, Webber's offense was nearly as effective in the first game of the day as the Warriors out hit William Carey 10-7 and also drew six walks.
The Warriors' offense spotted starter
Zak Spivy a three-run lead through three innings as
Chris Medina hit his second homer of the season in the top of the third to bring in two runs. Media would finished with two hits, two runs and three RBI's in the game.
However, Webber committed two errors in the bottom half of the fourth inning as the Crusaders took a 5-3 advantage before the Warriors answered with back-to-back runs in the fifth and six innings to tie it up on RBI's by
Jesse Coleman and
Mark Martinez.
Despite a solid nine-inning effort allowing only six hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters, Spivy was unable to get his first win of the season as the two teams battled all the way until the 11th inning when the Crusaders pushed across the winning run.
"We played okay today, but just had one bad inning of baseball," said Head Coach
Brad Niethammer. "We have to start doing a better job with the little things, and then the wins will start coming. We will be back at it tomorrow."
Next up, Webber will play the same two teams on Saturday, February 17. The Warriors will battle Campbellsville again at 1 p.m. central time and will then take on William Carey in a night game starting at 7 p.m.
