Women’s basketball drops final road game of season

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (February 15, 2018) – The Webber International University women's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered as the Warriors were beaten 75-54 by Johnson & Wales University on Thursday evening in what was the final game away from home for the team this season.

Ashley Perry led the way for the Warriors with 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks while Montrese Weller added 13 points on three 3-pointers and Tiffany Zito had 10 rebounds and eight points to nearly record the second double-double of her final season. Breyonna Reed matched Zito with eight points and added four assists and three steals, Emmarrie Carmen grabbed eight rebounds, and Elise Hinson made her second appearance of the season, finishing 3-of-4 from the free throw line with three rebounds.

The Warriors simply could not get much going in the first half outside of the free throw line or field goals by Perry. Webber finished the first half with 11 made free throws and 12 points from Perry, accounting for 21 of the Warriors' 25 points at the break.

Webber started the game trailing 8-0 just under three minutes in, then found itself behind 14-2 with 3:25 left in the first quarter before finishing off the first 10 minutes down by 10 at 18-8. Perry accounted for six of the Warriors' eight first-quarter points on two and-one plays.

In the second quarter, the score became even more lopsided as Webber trailed 27-12 just over three minutes in, and then JWU doubled up the score at 32-16 with only four minutes left before halftime. Next, the fifth 3-pointer of the half out of six for the Wildcats made it 35-16 before JWU made it a 20-point game at 38-18 with 2:45 on the clock.

Webber committed seven turnovers in the opening quarter with only three made field goals (3-17; 17.6 percent) and then finished the first half at only 18.9 percent (7-37) from the field and a 0-for-10 mark from three compared to 43.6 percent shooting (17-39) overall for the Wildcats in the half.

It was the fourth loss in a row for the Warriors, who equaled their longest losing streak of the season and fell to 9-19 overall, 3-14 in The Sun Conference and 3-11 in away games. JWU, meanwhile, saw its record raise to 11-15 and 7-10.

The Warriors are now in a three-way tie for seventh in The Sun Conference standings, one game behind Thomas University (8-15, 4-13) for the final spot in the league's postseason tournament.

Webber's final game of its 2017-18 season will be its Senior Day as the Warriors host Keiser University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
