BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2018) – The Warriors could not find a way to slow down the offense of the No. 4 team in the country, Southeastern University, who beat the No. 25 Webber International University baseball team in both games (12-2 in game one; 11-5 in game two) of a Sun Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the Heart of Florida Field.
In game one, the Warriors started off in a hole down five runs going into the bottom of the second before getting going a little bit on the offensive side themselves
In the Warriors' half of the second,
Brett Kaminski reached base on an error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before being moved over to third on a deep fly out to right field by
Cristian Rivera.
Mark Martinez made his at bat count with an RBI single down the first base line, and then he was doubled home by
Luis Esteban to cut the deficit down to 5-2.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to put any more runs on the board and fell in a shortened seven inning game for the first time since May 6, 2016, against Keiser University.
In game two, the Warriors again found themselves behind early on as Southeastern crossed the plate five times in the second inning after doing so four times in the second inning of game one.
Down 5-0, Webber battled all the way back to tie it as
Marcus Begg hit a two-RBI line drive home run to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
However, from there, the Fire buried the Warriors with another big inning as Southeastern put up a six-spot in the top of the seventh to all but put the game away.
Despite a strong pitching effort in relief by
Jesse Coleman (0-2), he was credited with the loss after allowing two unearned runs. In fact, each of the six runs in the seventh inning for the Fire were unearned as Webber made four errors as a team in the frame.
Chris Medina, Begg and
Quirino Esquivel each finished with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate in game two to lead a Warriors' attack that produced 10 hits.
After the two losses, Webber's record now sits at 2-7 overall and 0-3 in The Sun Conference while Southeastern remained undefeated at 11-0 and 3-0.
The Warriors will look to get back on track when they head to No. 6 William Carey University to play in a tournament also featuring 20th-ranked Campbellsville University. Webber will play each team once on Friday, February 16, and will then battle the same two teams the following day on Saturday, February 17.
