Women’s basketball falls after good start at Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (December 8, 2018) – Briana Williams and Montrese Weller each put up a team-high 16 points for the Webber International University women's basketball team at the College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday, but the points came in a losing effort as the Warriors fell by 22, 77-55.

Webber (4-6 overall, 1-4 The Sun Conference) actually led by as much as 11 (17-6) with 3:25 left in the first quarter and last lead at 25-24 with 8:24 on the clock in the second quarter. The Warriors' first quarter lead was aided by eight early points from Weller and four from Breyonna Reed as the duo accounted for each of team's first eight points of the contest and 13 of its first 17 points in all.

The good start for the Warriors before giving up the lead in the second quarter has been a theme for Webber over each of its last three ballgames.

A jumper by Erica Foote and an and-one by Julie Moreau toward the end of the first quarter made it 22-14 Warriors and stopped an 8-0 Mariners' run that got Coastal Georgia to within three.

Webber then led 22-16 after the opening 10 minutes before Weller kicked off the second quarter with her third three of the game to make it 25-16 only eight seconds into the period.

Coastal Georgia (8-5, 4-2), unfortunately, proceeded to go on a big 17-0 run over the next eight-plus minutes. Williams scored with 1:27 left before the half to get the Warriors to within six at 33-27 before the Mariners scored two more times to lead by 10 and outscore Webber 21-5 in the quarter as a whole.

A 7-0 Webber run featuring a layup by Weller, a three by Williams and a jumper by Abby Unis got the Warriors to within seven at 44-37 four minutes into the third quarter, and then an and-one by Weller one second before the four-minute mark in the quarter made it 49-40. That would be, however, the last time the Warriors got to within single-digits.

Neither team shot particularly well with both teams finishing under 36 percent overall and both teams going exactly 6-for-23 from 3-point range.

One difference, however, was the number of made and attempted free throws as the Warriors finished 5-of-7 (71.4%) compared to 13-of-30 (43.4%) for the Mariners.

Webber was also outscored 42-18 on points in the paint.

Williams' and Weller's points both came on six made field goals as Weller connected on three 3-pointers and Williams hit on two. Those were, however, about the only positive offensive performances from Webber as no other Warrior scored more than five points.

On the boards, Unis hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds and added a career-high three assists as well. Reed also set a career-high in rebounds with nine.

The Warriors' next two matchups will come on the road against NCAA Division-II schools as Webber travels to Lynn University on Wednesday, December 12, for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff before taking on Saint Leo University at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 14.
