Women’s basketball stumbles at home against Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 6, 2018) – After earning a big 10-point win in its last Sun Conference game against rival Warner University last Saturday, the Webber International University women's basketball team looked to use that momentum to get back to .500 in conference play, but fell short with a 10-point loss, 70-60, against Thomas University on Thursday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (4-5 overall, 1-3 The Sun Conference), was led in scoring by freshman Taniya Patrick with 16 points. Patrick did her damage of 8-of-12 shooting and also added 12 rebounds and five blocks. It was her fourth straight double-double to open conference play, was her fifth double-double of the season overall, and was her third game with four or more blocks.

Breyonna Reed also played well from the get go, finishing with 13 points on 50 percent shooting (6-12) while adding four assists and two steals. Eletra Graham added 10 points, all in the first half, on 2-for-2 shooting from 3-point range; and last but not least, Kadejah Huggins added a career-high five assists.

After a layup by Reed 15 seconds in into the second half followed by a 7-0 Thomas (4-8, 2-3) run made it 43-33 Night Hawks with 7:19 left in the third quarter, the Warriors would not get any closer than five during the period before getting within three twice early in the final 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, a layup by Patrick from Huggins with 8:06 left was answered with a fast break layup by the Night Hawks. Then, a jumper by Reed made it 53-50 with 6:34 to go, and Webber had multiple chances to get even closer, but two missed layups by the Warriors came back to haunt them as Thomas scored five points in a row to go up by eight at 58-50 with less than five minutes left.

Next up for Webber is another Sun Conference matchup, this time on the road at the College of Coastal Georgia at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 8. The Warriors will then play two NCAA Division-II schools the following week, beginning with Lynn University on Wednesday, December 12, and finishing with Saint Leo University on Friday, December 14.
