BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 3, 2018) – The Webber International University women's basketball team fell to Edward Waters College for the second time this season, this time by a score of 77-53 in nonconference action on Monday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Despite the lackluster performance overall, it was a great start for Webber (4-4), which led 15-2 seven minutes and 17 seconds in.
The final basket of the early run for the Warriors came by
Breyonna Reed, who got off to a good start with six early points.
Taniya Patrick also provided an and-one and
Montrese Weller and
Briana Williams both connected on 3-pointers during the run as Webber shot 62.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three until that point before going cold and not hitting again from beyond the arc until with a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
After starting the game at only 16.7 percent shooting, Edward Waters (8-5) proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to take a one-point lead at 16-15 in the second quarter before another and-one by Patrick stopped the run and gave the Warriors back a lead that would stand until the final minute of the first half. The Tigers would go on to finish the half with eight straight points to take a three-point lead at 29-26.
It was a six-minute-and-11-second scoring drought for Webber during EWC's 14-0 run, and then Webber was haunted by a 15-1 EWC run over the first six minutes of the third quarter that gave the Tigers a 17-point advantage at 44-27.
The Warriors would not convert on a field goal in the second half until with 3:51 on the clock in the third.
In all, the Warriors were done in by 36 turnovers, leading to 18 steals for the Tigers and a 33-14 differential in points off turnovers. Webber was also out-rebounded 29-6 on the offensive glass and was outscored 27-6 on second chance points.
Webber did, however, win the battle of fast break points 17-8.
Patrick finished with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting while adding eight rebounds and two blocks, and
Breyonna Reed finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Both players were perfect from the free throw line and were one of three Warriors with two assists, joining
Kadejah Huggins, who finished with eight points and five rebounds.
Next up, Webber returns to Sun Conference play at home on Thursday, December 6, with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Thomas University.
