CANTON, Mo. (November 9, 2018) – In its first game of the year outside of Florida, the Webber International University men's basketball team traveled to Missouri to face Culver-Stockton College on a snowy Friday night. The Warriors came up short for their first loss of the 2018-2019 season by a score of 87-74.
In a game that Webber led at the end of a low-scoring first half at 36-30, the Warriors were unable to get the offense going in the second half despite shooting a better percentage both from the field overall and from 3-point range. In all, the Wildcats outscored Webber 57-38 over the final 20 minutes.
One of the turning moments in the game came during the Wildcats' 8-0 run in the second half that made it a 10-point game at 68-58 with 6:43 left in the contest.
In all, it was a 14-3 run for CSC that made the score 75-61 with under five minutes left.
A layup by
Malik Morrow and then a 3-pointer by Morrow got it back to a nine-point game at 75-66 with 3:24 left to play, but that was a close as Webber would get as the Wildcats scored the next five points in less than a minute to go back ahead by 14 again.
Leading the way for the Warriors were Morrow and
Tommie Luke each with 17 points. Morrow also added four rebounds while Luke had six assists and five rebounds.
Garrett Woodmansee was next in the scoring column with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range while also bringing in three boards and dishing out two assists.
Other contributors were
Rasheem Etienne with nine points and five assists and
Nicholas Blocker with eight points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Head Coach
Allen Corbin said "We did not play well today, that is no secret. I expect our guys to bounce back tomorrow and get better every day just like what we always talk about. "
The Warriors will continue their road trip in Missouri as they face off against Hannibal-LaGrange University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 10.
