HANNIBAL, Mo. (November 10, 2018) – The Webber International University men's basketball team ended its road trip in Missouri against Hannibal-LaGrange University in a game where the Warriors would pull out a hard-fought win by a final score of 61-60.
The battle between the Warriors (3-1) and the Trojans (0-3) never saw one team lead by more than eight points.
With Webber trailing 57-53 with 36 seconds remaining, the Warriors did not quit and caught a break when senior guard
Nicholas Blocker was fouled attempting a 3-point shot.
Blocker hit all three free-throws to make it a one point game at 57-56, and then the Warriors elected to foul to put the Trojans at the charity stripe for a one-and-one scenario with around 25 seconds left in the contest.
HLU missed the free throw attempt, and the Warriors quickly capitalized on the opportunity and took advantage when
Tommie Luke converted the go-ahead bucket to make the score 58-57 Webber.
On the Trojans' next possession, the Warriors caused a turnover that forced HLU to foul Luke and put him on the free-throw line.
Luke went on to hit both freebies, giving Webber a three-point lead at 60-57.
A big rebound and additional free throw by
Simon Fransis in the final seconds helped secure the nail-biting win before a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by the Trojans.
Like the previous game against Culver-Stockton College, the Warriors were led by both Luke and
Malik Morrow, who finished 12 points apiece.
Morrow also added six rebounds while Luke added three boards of his own and three assists as well.
Fransis finished his day with eight points and nine rebounds, nearly capturing a double-double.
Senior three-point specialist
Nikita Orap came off the bench and provided 14 points that included four 3-pointers in his 11 minutes of action.
"Today was a very ugly game, but it was a great experience" said Head Coach
Allen Corbin. "We have been preaching defense, toughness and execution, and that is what won the game down the stretch. It will be great to get back home to Florida and rest."
Webber is headed back to warm and sunny Babson Park, Florida, for its first home game of the 2018-19 season. It will also be the first Sun Conference game of the season as the Warriors welcome No. 11-ranked Southeastern University into the Sabbagh Athletic Center on Thursday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m.
