BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 7, 2018) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team has earned the No. 1 overall seed in The Sun Conference's Women's Volleyball Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Also for the second time in three years, the Warriors will host the semifinal and championship rounds on their home court inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center, this time set for Friday, November 9, and Saturday, November 10, in sweet home Babson Park, Florida.
With an overall record of 22-5 and a Sun Conference mark of 14-2, Webber was named The Sun Conference's Regular-Season Co-Champions along with second-place Southeastern University as both team's earned a bye into the conference tournament semifinals.
It was the second regular-season championship over the last three seasons for Webber, which is also vying for its third straight conference tournament title.
No. 1 Webber, which is also receiving votes in the latest NAIA National Coaches' Poll, will serve host to Crooked Lake rival and No. 5 Warner University (14-14, 9-7) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the second semifinal. Warner defeated No. 4 St. Thomas University 3-2 (12-25, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 15-8) in their quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, November 6.
The first semifinal matchup at 3:30 p.m. at Webber on Friday will feature No. 2 Southeastern (22-3, 14-2) and No. 3 the College of Coastal Georgia (20-11, 11-5). In their quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 Keiser University on Tuesday night, the Mariners were winners at 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 26-24).
The winners of the two semifinals will meet up at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the championship and the right to represent The Sun Conference in the NAIA Opening Round.
The Warriors will serve as the host of the tournament after taking down Southeastern at home in only three sets back on September 26.
In all, Webber is 9-0 at home so far in 2018 after also seeping Coastal Georgia on October 10, defeating Warner 3-2 way back on September 19, beating Keiser University 3-1 on October 24 and sweeping St. Thomas on Senior Day on Oct. 27.
As a team, Webber was tied for first in The Sun Conference during the regular season in digs per set (19.0), and was second in kills per set (12.5), second in assists per set (11.6), tied for third in blocks per set (1.7) and fourth in hitting percentage (0.171).
The Warriors will also enter the postseason ranked 12th in the NAIA in digs per set and 50th in assists per set.
Individually during the regular season, junior libero
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos led the conference and was rated 12th nationally at 5.9 digs per set, and senior outside hitter
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu was tied for third in the conference with 3.4 kills per set.
