Men’s basketball sweeps in Trinity Baptist College Tip-Off Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 3, 2018) – The 2018-19 Webber International University men's basketball season officially got underway on the afternoon of Friday, November 2, as the Warriors beat St. Andrews University in a high scoring affair, 92-82. The Warriors carried that momentum into Saturday's noon contest against Southeastern Baptist College as they swept the weekend with an 86-76 victory.

Both games were very similar as the Warriors got off to hot starts, held large first half leads, shot well from 3-point range and won by 10.

In Webber's first game of the tournament against its sister school St. Andrews University, the Warriors came out with a fast start as they put up 52 points in the first 20 minutes and led 52-30 at the intermission.

The second half was much different as Webber held off an SAU team that then put up 52 points of its own in the second half, outscoring Webber 52-40 during the final 20 minutes.

Leading the way in the scoring column for the Warriors was sophomore Tommie Luke, the reigning The Sun Conference Freshmen of the Year, who stuffed the stat sheet with an impressive 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block.

Four other contributors who also scored double-digit points for Webber were Kevin Grace and Rasheem Etienne both with 13, Nikita Orap with 10, and Malik Morrow with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds to kick off his Warrior career.

The Warriors shot an impressive 43.33 percent from behind the arc, knocking down 13-of-30 3-point shots.

The Warriors' trend of a big first half while raining 3-pointers continued on Saturday against the SBC Chargers as Webber again had a big lead at halftime, 49-28. For the second straight game, the Warriors also finished with 13 3-pointers, shooting 36 percent on the day.

The leading scorers for Webber on Saturday were Luke with 16, Simon Fransis with 12, Etienne with 10 and Morrow also with 10.

"I was excited to see our guys get on the floor and get off to a good start on the season," said Head Coach Allen Corbin. "We have a ton of stuff to get better on and we will learn from this trip this weekend. I want to give my staff credit for preparation and support over the last few days. We could not have won these games without them. I am excited to get back to practice and improve for this upcoming week. This will be a huge week for us."

The Warriors will start off their big week in an exhibition game against NCAA Division-I Florida International University on Wednesday, November 7, in Miami. Then Webber will pack up and head to Missouri to face off against Culver-Stockton College on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Hannibal-Lagrange University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
