MELBOURNE, Fla. (November 19, 2018) – It was a strong first six minutes and a competitive showing for the Webber International University women's basketball team against Florida Tech on Monday, but in the end the Warriors would fall to the Panthers by a final score of 77-57 in an exhibition game.
It was raining three's in the first quarter as both teams shot 50 percent from long range. The Warriors finished with three makes in the first 10 minutes while Florida Tech connected on five three's.
Webber scored the first five points in this one before the first three by the Panthers, and then the Warriors led by a score of 7-3 after a score by
Taniya Patrick on an assist from
Breyonna Reed.
The two teams then traded 3-pointers. A three by
Briana Williams after the assist from Reed made it 10-7 Warriors, and then Florida Tech answered right away with a three of its own to tie it again.
On Webber's next possession, another three by Williams made it 13-10 Warriors, but again Florida Tech had the answer with a game-tying three; and then after a Webber turnover, Florida Tech made yet another three on its next shot to take its first lead at 16-13.
After a score by Patrick made it 16-15 with 4:21 on the clock in the first quarter, the Panthers took control, ending the first period up six at 21-15 and then using two early three's in the second quarter to quickly go ahead 27-15.
In all, Florida Tech went ahead 31-15 in the second quarter after a 15-0 run, which was a part of a bigger 31-10 run.
Webber scored the final four points of the first half to get within 12 at 44-32, and then a three by
Montrese Weller got the margin down to 12 again at 49-37 around three minutes into the third quarter.
A minute-and-a-half later, back-to-back layups by
Julie Moreau then got Webber's deficit down to 10 at 51-41, but a 10-0 Panther run made it 61-41 to put it out of reach.
Patrick finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double in three outings, and she also added three blocks. Weller was next with nine points on three 3-pointers, Reed finished with eight rebounds and a very strong eight assists, and
Abby Unis added eight points and seven boards.
The Panthers finished with 12 3-pointers on the night, including eight in the first half on 53.33 percent shooting from behind the arc over the first 20 minutes.
Webber will now return to regular-season action with a nonconference meeting at home against Mayville State University from North Dakota. The Warriors and the Comets will do battle at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, two days after Thanksgiving.
