BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2018) – The Webber International University women's basketball team got back into the win column by outlasting Mayville State University 59-57 on Saturday afternoon inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber (3-3) led by 11 (49-38) after a dominating third quarter and a three by
Eletra Graham 11 seconds into the fourth quarter, but needed two free throws by junior
Emmarrie Carmen with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to come out on top.
Mayville State (2-4) certainly lived up to its hype as a team that loves to let it fly from 3-point range. The Comets connected on 4-of-10 3-pointers in the first quarter and added two more in the first five minutes of the second quarter to lead 28-21. Mayville would go on to finish with 34 total attempts from long range with nine makes.
In all, Mayville State shot a strong 52.9 percent from the field in the first quarter before the Warriors put together a big rally in the second quarter. Webber held the Comets to only six points and 12.5 percent shooting in the second quarter to get within two at 28-26, and then the Warriors doubled up Mayville 20-10 in the third quarter while shooting 56.3 percent from the field themselves.
After Mayville's six 3-pointers in the first 15 minutes of the contest, the Comets went cold and would not strike again from long range until with just over eight minutes remaining as Mayville began its comeback attempt that would eventually result in a 57-57 tie with 51 seconds left to play.
Head Coach
Grady Morrell said, "I was extremely proud of our defensive execution in the second and third quarters."
Carmen finished with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Carmen was also one of four Warriors with four rebounds, a category that was led by
Montrese Weller with 10, matching her career-high.
Breyonna Reed was next in the scoring column for the Warriors with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Reed and
Briana Williams also both added three assists.
Next up, Webber will play in its fourth and final exhibition matchup of the season at Stetson University at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 30. The Warriors will then face a quick turnaround the following day on Saturday, December 1, as Webber returns to The Sun Conference action against Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 2 p.m.
