Warriors fall to 0-2 in conference play

AVE MARIA, Fla. (November 17, 2018) – Taniya Patrick finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds to record her second straight double-double in conference play and Breyonna Reed scored a season-high 12 points, but the Webber International University women's basketball team fell to Ave Maria University 69-55 on Saturday in what was the Warriors' first Sun Conference game on the road of the 2018-19 season.

Patrick finished 6-of-9 from the field with two blocks while Reed was 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line while adding three assists.

Eletra Graham finished with 10 points and was followed by Emmarrie Carmen with nine points and Montrese Weller with eight.

Even though Webber shot a strong 44.83 percent from the field and 60 percent from three in the first half, the Warriors were hurt by allowing the Gyrenes to shoot 53.13 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.

"We just did not come to play defense today," spoke Head Coach Grady Morrell.

In the second half, Webber fell to only 36 percent shooting from the field and hit only one 3-pointer (12.50 percent) as the Warriors were never able to get going in an effort to mount a comeback.

One of the key differences in the contest was Webber being nearly doubled up in total rebounding (43-25) while also being out-rebounded 14-5 in offensive rebounding, leading to a 16-5 differential in second chance points.

Similarly to the Warriors' last time out against No. 3 Southeastern University last Thursday, Webber led five minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by Weller.

The three by Weller in Saturday's game made it a small 9-8 lead for the Warriors, but from there, Ave Maria closed the quarter on a 13-5 run over a three-minute-and-twenty-second span to lead by seven.

After the Gyrenes led by as much as 16 (37-21) in the second quarter, Webber finished off the first half on a 3-pointer by Graham and a layup by Patrick to get back within single digits at 39-30.

Then, after Ave Maria led by 18 (62-44) with 8:44 left in the game, Webber's final push came with an 11-0 run that made it a seven-point game at 62-55 with just under five minutes to play.

That would, however, be the final point scored by the Warriors as Webber missed each of its last five shots of the game while Ave Maria scored the final seven points.

Webber's record fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria's improved to an eye-popping 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the TSC.

The Warriors will return to the court at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 19, for an exhibition game at Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida, and then Webber gets back to regular-season action with a nonconference tilt at home against Mayville State University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 24.
