BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 15, 2018) – In what was their first regular-season game in 12 days, The Warriors led 9-4 halfway through the first quarter and trailed by only one late in the second quarter; but after a six-point halftime deficit, the Webber International University women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Southeastern University 88-62 in what was the first Sun Conference game of the 2018-19 season for both squads.
A layup by
Taniya Patrick and a 3-pointer by
Montrese Weller gave the Warriors the early 9-4 lead five minutes into the game, and a score by
Julie Moreau to end the first quarter stopped an 11-0 Fire run to make it a four-point Southeastern lead at 15-11.
Southeastern then started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to go up by nine at 22-13, and then starting at the six-and-a-half-minute mark in the period, Webber battled back with eight straight points to draw within one at 25-24.
Emmarrie Carmen scored twice on layups to start the 8-0 Warrior run while
Dysheka Price and Weller finished it with layups of their own.
After the Warriors stayed close by keeping the Fire under 17 points and under 40 percent shooting during each of the first two quarters, the script flipped in the third quarter as the Fire closed out the first half on a 7-2 run to lead 32-26, and then Southeastern put up a very impressive 33 points over the next 10 minutes on 66.7 percent shooting in the third quarter to run away with it. In all, the Fire started the third quarter on a huge 28-8 run.
Despite the final score, it was a strong effort by the Warriors, who showed that they could play with the Fire and would not back down.
"We fought hard and played well to start, but I think we need more experience in the post to change the outcome of a game like that," said Head Women's Basketball Coach
Grady Morrell.
Weller finished with 21 points on five 3-pointers to lead the Warriors in scoring, and Patrick secured the second double-double of her freshman season, both of which have come at home, by hauling in 12 rebounds to go along with 10 points.
Briana Williams added three 3-pointers and
Eletra Graham added two as both ladies matched Patrick with 10 points. Williams also added six rebounds and four assists, and was one of three Warriors with six boards matching Price and Carmen.
Breyonna Reed recorded nine assists for the second time this season at home as well.
Webber fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in The Sun Conference while Southeastern improved to 3-0 and 1-0.
Next up, Webber plays at Ave Maria University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, for its first road TSC contest of the season.
