Women’s basketball drops first road game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 1, 2018) – Despite a lead with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Webber International University women's basketball team fell in its first road game of the 2018-19 season with a 69-60 loss to Edward Water College in Jacksonville, Florida, on Thursday night.

Freshman forward Taniya Patrick had another strong showing, leading both teams with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field.

Transfer senior Briana Williams was next with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and three 3-pointers. Williams also added four assists and three steals while Breyonna Reed added a game-high five assists.

In all, the Warriors had 17 assists on 24 made field goals.

Off the bench, Dysheka Price made her season debut with nine points on 2-for-2 shooting from beyond the arc, and Abby Unis finished with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

After trailing by as much as 11 in the first eight and half minutes of the game, Webber was in all outscored by eight in the first quarter and by four in the second, but chipped away in the third quarter to make it a seven-point game at 52-45.

The Warriors trailed by 15, 46-31, with over five and a half minutes left in the third quarter before closing the period on a big 14-6 run.

Webber then took the lead on a jumper by Patrick with 4:44 on the clock in the final quarter to make it 55-54 and to put Webber ahead for the first time since the opening quarter.

The lead for Webber, however, lasted less than 30 seconds as the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to go back ahead by seven at 64-57 with just under two minutes left.

Webber (1-1 overall) finished the contest with 27 turnovers compared to 17 for Edward Waters (2-1) and gave up 31 offensive rebounds en route to being out-rebounded by 14 at 58-44.

"To win on the road, we must protect the ball better and rebound a lot better," commented Head Coach Grady Morrell.

The Warriors will remain on the road for a matchup with Truett McConnell University of the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, in Cleveland, Georgia.
