MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 20, 2018) – In what was its first match in 10 days, the Webber International University men's soccer team battled to another one-goal decision against St. Thomas University, falling 2-1 to the Bobcats on Saturday night.
All 10 of Webber's non-ties so far in 2018 have come by only one goal. The Warriors are now 4-7-2 overall and are 1-6 in The Sun Conference. St. Thomas is 6-6-2 and 5-1-2, which is good for the best conference record in the TSC.
The Warriors' lone goal came from freshman
Mateo Sassoni from 15 yards out in the 58th minute, cutting a 2-0 deficit in half.
The score was Sassoni's sixth of the season and fourth in three matches.
Head Coach
Neil Cockburn said, "The boys did not show up until the second half, and dominated most of the second half. It was a great goal by Sassoni. We also had two shots cleared from the line.
Baxter Smith's shot in the six-yard box and Bryan Mejia's header cleared the line from a cross from
Ervin Ikanovic. I am proud of my boys even though our conference tournament dreams are over. It says a lot about my boys' character that they are willing to fight for a win."
In all, Sassoni finished with three shot attempts while
Baxter Smith fired two and
Orian Burzic and
Diachi Arahara each added one attempt. Goalkeeper
Thomas Debladis finished with five saves, giving him five or more stops in 11 of Webber's 12 decisions so far on the year.
Webber will play its final road match of the season on Wednesday, October 24, at 4 p.m. against Florida Memorial University in Miramar, Florida. The Warriors will then look to finish their season strong at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, during Webber's Senior Day against Keiser University.
