WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (October 19, 2018) – The Webber International University football team pulled to within three points of Faulkner University with a 10-play, 81-yard drive led by new quarterback
Antwan Washington to open the second half, but from there the Eagles ran away with it. In the end, Webber fell to Faulkner by a final score of 31-14 on a Friday night under the lights at Denison Stadium.
Webber (4-3 overall, 0-3 Mid-South Conference Sun Division) trailed by 10, 17-7 at halftime, but came out of the locker room with a new quarterback, Washington, leading the team.
After Webber's first drive of the second half culminated with a one-yard touchdown pass from Washington to
Timothy Miller to make it 17-14, the Warriors looked to have new life.
Washington was 3-for-3 on the drive for 46 yards.
Late in the third quarter, the Warrior defense forced a three-and-out near midfield for Faulkner (4-4, 1-3); and then early in the fourth quarter, the Webber defense came up big again with a stop on fourth-and-one from their own one-yard line. Unfortunately, the Webber offense was never able to capitalize.
Faulkner then jumped ahead by 10 again, 24-14, with a 9-play, 43-yard touchdown drive that ended with 6:15 left in the contest.
With the Warriors desperate to put points on the board, a turnover after multiple reverses in Webber's own backfield on first-and-10 from its own 27 resulted in a defense score for the Eagles to put the game away.
Kwamaine Brown and
Davonte Williams both rushed for 44 yards with Williams doing so on only five carries, good for an average of 8.8 yards per attempt. Washington added 34 rushing yards on eight attempts. Among the receivers, Miller finished with three catches for 20 yards,
Jeremiah Harris finished with a team-high 59 yards on two catches, and
Jeremiah Lucas added two catches for 25 yards.
Senior linebacker
Aaron Givens led both teams with 13 total tackles while
Keith Neal was next on the team with seven. The Eagles did a good job of keeping the Webber defense off-balance all night with lots of screen passes and quick-hitting passing plays.
Punter
Joe Ebel finished with an average of 41.6 yards per punt on five punts, belting one for a long of 50 yards and putting one punt inside the 20-yard line.
Earlier on in the action,
Travonte Haynie intercepted his second pass of the season, setting the Webber offense up within Faulkner's 40-yard line just over five minutes into the game. However, a failed passing attempt on fourth-and-12 by starting quarterback
Brady Ooten ended that drive.
Webber then got on the board and tied the game in the first quarter after a missed field goal from 42 yards out by the Eagles led to a Warrior drive that saw Ooten complete a 26-yard pass to Harris and a nine-yard pass to Miller before Williams finished it off with a 41-yard burst for his fifth touchdown of the season.
Faulkner's second score of the game came early in the second quarter after a botched punt return by the Warriors gave the Eagles the ball right back around midfield, leading to a 24-yard field goal.
The Warriors will return to action next weekend on Saturday, October 27, seeking their first Mid-South Conference Sun Division win. Webber will battle its rival Warner University at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeland Christian School in Lakeland, Florida, in the 2018 Lake Caloosa Clash.
