LAKELAND, Fla. (October 27, 2018) – It is often said that in a rivalry game, you can throw out the stat sheets and record books. That was certainly the case on Saturday as the Webber International University football team fell to rival Warner University 19-7 during the sixth installment of the annual Lake Caloosa Clash.
Webber was outgained 287-205 on the offensive end and was outrushed 182-97, a typical strong suite of the Warriors who entered the afternoon averaging 212 rushing yards per game. In all, the Royals saw three different players rush for over 50 yards.
Webber was also only 2-of-9 on third down while Warner gained twice as many first downs (20-10) as the Warriors. Additionally, Warner was 5-for-6 in the red zone.
One of the few bright spots for the Warriors came on the defensive side of the ball as senior linebacker
Aaron Givens finished with an extremely impressive 17 total tackles, six of which were solo.
Tyson Burch,
Antonio Brown and
Keith Neal added eight tackles apiece while
Emmil Glover finished with seven tackles, three tackles for loss and Webber's only sack of the contest.
Seven of Burch's eight tackles were solo tackles, and Brown matched Glover as the only Warriors with multiple tackles for loss.
The Warriors trailed 16-0 at halftime after a 13-point second quarter for the Royals.
Webber's lone score of the game came with 10:31 on the clock in the third quarter when freshman running back
Davonte Williams scored on an eight-yard rush to make it 16-7.
In all, Williams would finish with 33 yards on the ground on only six attempts, good for an average of 5.5 yards per rush.
Freshman quarterback
Brady Ooten finished 10-of-23 through the air for 108 yards while adding 29 yards on the ground on 11 attempts. Half of those completions went to senior
Jeremiah Harris, who hauled in five catches for 66 total yards.
Webber and Warner are now 3-3 all-time against each other. The Warriors were victorious in Warner's inaugural season in 2013 and were winners again in 2015 and in 2017. Now, the Royals get to hold on to the Lake Caloosa trophy for a year after previously doing so in 2014 and in 2016.
After such a promising start to the season, the ending on Saturday also left Webber (4-4 overall) as the last team without a divisional win in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division at 0-4. Warner is now 1-7 and 1-3.
Saturday's contest against Warner also served as the retirement ceremony for Warner Head Football Coach Rod Shafter, who also coached for the Warriors for four seasons beginning in 2002 with Webber's club season and then in 2003 with the Warriors' inaugural campaign. During his time at Webber, Shafer and the Warriors laid claim to wins over teams such as current NAIA Powerhouse Bethel University and NCAA Division-I Jacksonville University.
Next up, Webber will take on one of the top teams in the MSC Sun Division, Ave Maria University, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, during the Warriors' Senior Day inside Denison Stadium. The Gyrenes are currently 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the division.
Currently on a four-game winning streak against Ave Maria, Webber blew out the Gyrenes by a final score of 42-10 last season.
