BLUFFTON, S.C. (October 17, 2018) –
Megan Warner and
Saoirse Browne both converted on match-tying goals as the Webber International University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Wednesday afternoon at Fin Land Field.
After another early 1-0 deficit for the Warriors, Warner's goal came in the 27th minute as she took the pass from
Sidney Usina and slipped the ball inside the far post to tie the match. It was the seventh goal of the season for Warner and was the first assist of the year for Usina.
Seven minutes later, USCB's Melissa Fichtner scored for the second time on the match on the second assist by Dina Stalnacke to make it 2-1.
The 2-1 score would then remain through the intermission until the 70th minute when the Warriors were awarded a penalty try off a hand ball. Browne proceeded to finish with the score to tie things up yet again with what was her first career goal.
Webber ended regulation with a wide shot by
Leah Borders, a saved shot by
Sarah Thigpen and a wide shot by Warner all within a six-minute span.
The Warriors fired two shot attempts in the first three minutes of overtime as a strike by Usina was saved and a shot by Borders was wide again; and then the Warrior defense stopped two Sand Shark attempts that came within a 34-second span in the 99th minute.
Both teams had three attempts in the final overtime period with goalkeeper
Alyssa Rodriguez making three saves and attempts from Warner and
Francesca Mascali being saved by the USCB keeper.
Head Coach
Brian Fallon said, "Today was a battle. It was also a day to see the younger players and the returners work so hard to be mentally fit and continually pursue the goal to win the match. Although this game ended in a tie, I am proud of their work rate and mental fitness to play so well and stay focused."
Warner would go on to finish with six total shots, four on goal, while Borders added three shots and Mascali finished with two, both of which were on frame.
Making her third career regular-season start, Rodriguez continued her strong play with eight saves to improve her record on the season to 1-1-1.
In all, the statistics were nearly even with USCB outshooting Webber by one at 18-17 and finishing with nine saves to eight for the Warriors; but it was Webber that finished with 11 shots on goal compared to 10 for the Sand Sharks.
With what was its first overtime match of the 2018 season, Webber's record now stands at 4-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in The Sun Conference. USCB is now 6-5-1 and 3-3-1, good enough for sixth in the league standings, one spot and only one match ahead of the Warriors.
With only three matches remaining in the regular season, Webber will host TSC foe St. Thomas University this Saturday on October 20 at 3 p.m. on Warrior Field.
