Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball sweeps Coastal Georgia; improves to 10-0 in conference

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 10, 2018) – For the second Wednesday in two weeks, the Webber International University women's volleyball team swept a top-three Sun Conference opponent, this time beating the College of Coastal Georgia 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-13) on Wednesday night during Webber's "Dig Pink Week".

Webber (17-3 overall, 10-0 TSC) is the first team to 10 wins in The Sun Conference in 2018. Additionally, the 3-0 score represented yet another sweep over top TSC competition at home for Webber after the Warriors defeated Polk County rival Southeastern University in straight sets two weeks ago on September 26.

The Warriors currently lead the TSC standings by a game and half over Southeastern (17-3, 9-2) and lead Coastal Georgia (13-9, 6-3) by 3.5 games. Additionally, Webber has already swept the fourth-place team in The Sun Conference, Warner University (10-11, 6-4), which just handed the Fire their second loss of the TSC slate.

"Tonight was a big win for us against one of TSC's best teams," stated Head Coach Lindsey Martin. "CCG did an amazing job passing and staying in system, challenging our tenacious defense all night. We've been working on our team consistently and having a more dynamic offense, and tonight was a great preview of what we're capable of against a tough team. As we turn our focus to Saturday's match, we will continue to stay ready for the tough competition that TSC has in the second half of our season."

Leading Webber against Coastal Georgia on Wednesday was Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu with 17 kills, Emily Bowen with 10 kills and Julia Ferraro and Kalameli Matautia both with eight. In was the ninth straight match reaching double-digit kills for Salanoa-Sagapolu, who also hit .536 percent for the match. Ferraro somehow hit even better, finishing at .583 percent while Bowen added a percentage of .333 percent.

Valerie Vargas finished with 23 assists and was followed closely by Gilmary Ramos with 19; and in the dig column, Nayrelis Pantoja Santos once again led the way with 21.

Also on the defensive side of things, three different Warriors (Ferraro, Matautia, Svenja Koenig) finished with two blocks.

Despite the score, the first two sets did not come easy for the Warriors as Webber trailed 20-19 in set number one before a 4-0 run made it 23-20 Warriors. The Mariners then got it back to a one-point margin after two Warrior errors before a kill by Matautia and a kill by Bowen two plays later gave the first point to the Warriors.

In the second set, Webber led 15-11 before Coastal Georgia battled back to tie it at 15-15. Similarly to the first set, Webber then trailed at 21-19 before three straight points made it 22-21 Warriors.

After the Mariners took two of the next three points to tie the second set up at 23-23, Ferraro came up huge with a kill and a service ace to give Webber the second set and completely swing all of the momentum into the Warriors' favor.

In all, the Warriors hit .414 in the third set and finished with a hitting percentage of .310 percent compared to .168 for the Mariners.

Webber's second and final match of its "Dig Pink Week" will come against Florida Memorial University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
