Volleyball finishes off “Dig Pink Week” with sweep of FMU

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 13, 2018) – The current winning streak for the Webber International University women's volleyball team now stands at 13 straight matches after the Warriors swept Florida Memorial University 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) on Saturday during the team's final match of its "Dig Pink Week" inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Both of Webber's matches during the "Dig Pink Week" were sweeps as the Warriors improved their record to 18-3 overall and 11-0 in The Sun Conference. Webber maintained its lead in the conference standings by more than one game. Florida Memorial fell to 9-9 and 3-7.

The win for Webber on Saturday marked the 22nd in a row for Webber over Florida Memorial since 2005. The Warriors have now earned 18 sweeps in the 22 matches over that span.

The win also represented the 10th straight home win and 16th consecutive win against a TSC team for Webber.

Leading the way was Emily Bowen with 13 kills and a .333 attack percentage, Nayrelis Pantoja Santos with 19 digs, Valerie Vargas with 17 assists, Kalameli Matautia with a career-high four blocks and Kayce Kavanaugh with a career-high of three service aces.

Webber used a 6-0 run in the first set to take an 18-15 lead and then led 23-18 before FMU used a 5-1 run to draw within one at 24-23. Fortunately for the Warriors, an ensuring service error by the Lions ended the first set in favor of Webber.

In a tight second set, the Warriors trailed 21-20 before five straight points for Webber on four FMU errors quickly gave the home team the two-sets-to-none advantage.

The second set was ultimately finished off on a kill by Svenja Koenig.

In the final frame, Webber led 15-5 and then had another 5-0 run to take control at 23-15. The run was highlighted by two kills from Bowen to get it started and was followed two points later with a kill by Matautia.

Next up, Webber begins a three-match road swing by traveling to play Polk County rival Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17. The Fire currently sit in second place in the TSC standings with a record of 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the TSC, two games behind the Warriors.
