WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (January 11, 2018) – With 7.4 seconds remaining in the game,
Breyonna Reed stepped up to the free throw line and sank two free throws to help send the Webber International University women's basketball team to a thrilling 70-69 win over Keiser University on Thursday evening at the Countess de Hoernle Student Life Center.
After trailing by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and down 65-59 with only two minutes remaining,
Montrese Weller scored on a jumper to make it 65-61 with 1:49 on the clock. Then, after a free throw by Keiser to make it 66-61 with 1:34 left, that is where things got a little crazy.
Jakia Davis scored to pull Webber within three at 66-63 with 1:19 left, and then Davis stole Keiser's inbounds pass and found
Ashley Perry with a layup to make it 66-65 with 1:10 to go and give the Warriors new life.
With 50 seconds left, Reed went to the free throw line with Webber trailing 67-65. Reed would make her first free throw attempt before her second was rebounded and put back by Davis to make it 68-67 Warriors. It was Webber's first lead since midway through the second quarter.
Over the next 35 seconds, Webber had the ball and the lead twice, but turned it over twice, leading to a clutch jumper from the baseline for the Seahawks to put Keiser ahead 69-68 with only 11 seconds left to play.
From there, Webber advanced the ball to half court after a timeout, and then inbounded the ball to Reed who immediately attacked and drew a Keiser foul, setting up her heroics from the charity stripe.
After Reed connected on both free throws to put Webber ahead, Keiser charged back down the court and put up a shot attempt at the buzzer on a turnaround jumper from around the free throw line, but the Seahawks' prayer would not be answered as it hit off the front of the rim.
In all, Webber closed the game on a 22-10 run after trailing 59-48 at the 7:15 mark in the fourth quarter.
Weller led the Warriors with 15 points while
Tiffany Zito finished with 12 (5-5 from the field) and Perry had 11. Reed and Davis both added nine points while
Shayla McPhearson added eight. Additionally, three Warriors (Reed,
Samantha Vitulli, McPhearson) dished out four assists while Davis and Perry both hauled in six rebounds. Lastly, Perry added two blocks while Vitulli added four steals and Reed had three steals.
With the win, Webber's record improved to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in The Sun Conference. Keiser fell to 4-15 and 1-7 with what was its 13th loss in a row overall and seventh straight conference defeat after starting the season 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
"We needed this win on the road and in the conference," said Head Coach
Grady Morrell. "It was a great team win for us."
In a back-and-forth first half that featured four ties and four lead changes, the Warriors led 13-10 after a 3-pointer by Vitulli on the assist from Weller, and then tied the game at 15 late in the first quarter before finishing the opening period trailing 17-15.
Webber led 23-19 in the second quarter after back-to-back 3-pointers by Weller and
Brianna Fuller, and then the Warriors led 25-23 with 5:20 left before halftime as Perry scored on a layup after a pass from Fuller.
However, similarly to how the Warriors fell behind at Florida Memorial University last Saturday (Jan. 6) after giving up a 6-1 run to end the first half and allowing the Lions to score 33 points in the third quarter, Webber saw Keiser finish the opening half on a 9-1 run and open the second half on a 7-1 run to take a 39-27 advantage three minutes into the third quarter on Thursday.
A 3-pointer by McPhearson halfway through the third quarter made it a seven-point game at 41-34, but the Seahawks scored the next six points over a minute and a half span to expand their lead back to 13 at 47-34.
Webber will return home to the Sabbagh Athletic Center to host Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, in more Sun Conference action.
