Carmen nets first career double-double in loss to Johnson & Wales

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 13, 2018) – Sophomore Emmarrie Carmen came up big with the first double-double of her career, but it would not be enough to propel the Warriors to victory as the Webber International University women's basketball team dropped a 71-64 decision to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

With the loss, Webber fell to 7-12 overall and 2-7 in The Sun Conference. Johnson & Wales' record rose to 7-11 and 3-6 as the Wildcats, who were coming off an overtime victory over Warner University only two days earlier, earned their third straight TSC win after starting off 0-6 in conference play. The Wildcats had previously lost seven games in a row before their current three-game winning streak. Both teams began the day tied for sixth in The Sun Conference, three games behind the fifth-place team, Ave Maria University.

Carmen finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and was one of three Warriors with 13 points as Ashley Perry and Montrese Weller each reached the same total. Perry also added eight rebounds, a career-high three blocks and two assists, and was one of two Warriors with three steals as Breyonna Reed added three steals, four points and a very strong six assists.

In the final quarter, Webber trailed by as much as 16 (59-43) with 8:30 left to play before chipping away and getting within six points with under a minute and a half left as Reed scored on a layup to make it 66-60.

Next, a layup by Weller again got it down to six at 68-62 with less than a minute left, but the Warriors simply ran out of time as two made free throws for JWU and a Webber turnover right after that sealed the Warriors' fate.

To start the game, the Warriors got off to a rough start after one quarter, trailing by eight (22-14) after only shooting 35.7 percent from the field (5-14) compared to 52.9 percent (9-17) for JWU.

The Wildcats also used four 3-pointers to grab ahold of their lead in the opening quarter before Weller answered with a three to get the second quarter started on a positive note for Webber.

A layup by Julie Moreau made it a three-point deficit for the Warriors at 22-19 just over a minute into the second quarter, but the Wildcats proceeded to go on a 10-4 run over the next two minutes and twenty seconds to jump ahead by nine at 32-23.

With 30 seconds remaining until halftime, JWU took a 17-point lead at 45-28 before Jakia Davis scored with 15 seconds left in the half to make it 45-30. After shooting over 50 percent from the field in the opening quarter, the Wildcats were even better in the second quarter, finishing the frame at 61.5 percent (8-13).

The Warriors attempted their comeback with solid defense in the third quarter, holding JWU scoreless through the first five and a half minutes of the quarter while going on a 6-0 run to get within nine at 45-36. Then, with only 1:22 left in the third quarter, the fifth straight point by Shayla McPhearson got the Warriors to within six at 49-43; however, from there, JWU scored five straight points to end the frame and get its lead back up to 11 at 54-43.

Webber held the Wildcats to only 10 percent shooting (1-10) in the third quarter and a mark of only 28.6 percent (4-14) in the final quarter, but was unable to close the gap due to only shooting 20 percent itself (3-15) in the third quarter.

In the end, JWU held the lead for most of the contest (38:56).

Next up, Webber will travel to Ave Maria University to play the Gyrenes for the second time this season. Webber and Ave will meet up at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 18, as the Warriors close out a season series against a fellow TSC opponent for the first time this season.
