Football scores season high; falls to Cumberland University

LEBANON, Tenn. (September 8, 2017) – Garry Chouloute threw for two touchdowns and passed for 236 yards in what was the Webber International University football team's best offensive game of the season, but it would not be enough as the Warriors were outlasted by Cumberland University, 38-24, on Friday night at Nokes-Lasater Field.

In a contest that was pushed up a day because of Hurricane Irma, Webber (1-2) was able to gather its composure and rally for a strong offensive performance after allowing 31 unanswered points by Cumberland (3-0) to start the game.

Just before halftime, the Warriors put together scoring drives of 45 and five yards. Marcus Mannerstedt connected on a long 43-yard field goal, and the final play of the opening half was a four-yard touchdown pass from Chouloute to freshman Jalen Cayo.

Next for the Warriors, Austin Logue capped a seven-play, 71-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to start the third quarter and pull Webber to within two scores at 31-17. That was, however, as close as the Warriors would get as the Phoenix answered with a 12-play, 65-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock.

Webber's final scoring play of the game came with five minutes left to play when Chouloute connected with another freshman, Jeremiah Lucas, for a 10-yard score.

After a rough start, Chouloute bounced back and displayed his tremendous ability with his arm and his feet, avoiding rushers and scrambling away from bad plays. He completed 27 of his 36 passes and also added 48 rushing yards en route to helping Webber win the statistical battle. The Warriors outgained the Phoenix 323-291 in total yards and recorded 18 first downs to 14 for Cumberland.

Nine Warriors recorded a reception on the day with Cayo leading the way with six grabs for 89 yards. Timothy Miller and Jeremiah Harris both added five catches for an offense that has begun to click three games into the season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Dequan Harvin led the Warriors with a season-high eight tackles while Alejandro Santos added six stops.

Next up, Webber will look to ride out Hurricane Irma, and is scheduled to play Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16, barring the weather and condition of the playing field.
