LAKE WALES, Fla. (September 23, 2017) – The Warriors scored twice in the first quarter and never looked back as the Webber International University football team rolled to a big 49-16 win over Kentucky Christian University on Saturday at Legion Field.
Webber (2-2) outgained KCU (0-5) 374 to 196 in total yardage, and presented a balanced offensive attack with 215 yards on the ground and 159 through the air.
Quarterback
Garry Chouloute completed 18 of 26 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and also added 67 yards on 11 carries with a one-yard rushing touchdown to get the scoring started nine-and-a-half minutes into the game.
The Warriors featured plenty of options out of the backfield as
Austin Logue rushed 11 times for 55 yards and a touchdown,
Dalton Pollock ran seven times for 53 yards and a touchdown, and
Cameron Wakefield ran seven times for 28 yards and yet another rushing touchdown. Additionally, fullback
Tyler Modlin got into the act with 26 yards on five carries for a 5.2 yards per carry average, and added a receiving touchdown as well.
The other receiving touchdown for Webber came from
Jeremiah Lucas, who finished with four catches for 60 yards.
Jeremiah Harris and
Timothy Miller each hauled in three catches while
Matthew Fling and
Jalen Cayo added two apiece.
"Our offense really got into a groove for the first time this season," said Head Coach
Kelly Scott. "We were able to dictate what we wanted to do, and that was really good to see."
Lucas' touchdown grab with only 1:20 remaining in the first half seemed to be a fitting end to a high-scoring period, but it would not be the end of the scoring for the Warriors as freshman linebacker
Cory Cotnoir returned a Knight's fumble 34 yards for a score to make it 28-9 Webber just before the intermission.
Playing in his first game of the season, junior linebacker
Chase Sams recorded a five tackles, while senior defensive lineman
Kevin Kearns led the team with six. Interceptions for the Warriors came from
Alejandro Santos,
Brandon Bell and
James Mallory.
Sophomore kicker
Marcus Mannerstedt drilled all seven of his extra point attempts to make sure the Knights never gained any momentum from a missed scoring opportunity.
"Even with the great result today, we still need to get to work and improve every day," said Scott. "Football is a game of constant improvement, but I am glad we are starting to figure out who we can go to and who we can trust, and when."
Next up, Webber will face one of its biggest tests of the season as the Warriors travel to play a tough Faulkner University team on Saturday, September 30. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama, in what will be the first ever Sun Division game in the Mid-South Conference for the Warriors.
"This is where it matters," concluded Scott. "Every game from here on out will determine our division standings. Faulkner is a really good team who is close to being nationally ranked in my opinion, so this will be a great chance for us to find out who we are."
