BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 5, 2017) –
Noel Omondi scored twice and assisted on another goal as he helped led the Webber International University men's soccer team over Trinity Baptist College, 5-2, on Tuesday at Warrior Field.
The win moves the Warriors to 2-0 on the young season, the first time for Webber since 2014, while the Eagles fell to 1-3.
The Eagles started the match off by scoring five minutes in, but the Warriors and Omondi rose to the challenge as the senior from London, England, scored on back-to-back goals just moments apart at the 20:42 and 22:32 marks.
Omondi's first goal came in the box as he gathered the ball off his chest after a pass from
Charlie Lambert from the sideline, and his second came on a header close to the goal off the feed form
Aldo Lopez.
"We started off slowly due to what I think was a lack of rest from Sunday," said Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "However, the guys really picked it up once they got their legs under them and started to play soccer more so than the long ball."
Less than two minutes before halftime, Webber scored what would be the deciding goal as goalkeeper
Randy Chesson launched a kick that found
Diachi Arahara on a breakaway right up the middle of the field where he beat the Trinity goalie one-on-one to make it 3-1.
Omondi contributed on another goal less than two minutes after the Eagles cut Webber's lead in half as he assisted on a score by
Armani D'Agostino at the 61:47 mark. After notching one of Webber's two goals in the season opener on Sunday,
Juan Pablo Zambrano contributed again with as assist to
Roman Nielavitzky to finish off the scoring at the 77:20 mark.
Chesson finished with five stops in the goal for the Warriors while Arahara led the offensive attack with five shots.
"I think we saw some really solid performances today by
Gary Obrien playing in the middle, and of course by Noel [Omondi] jumping for the ball like he did," concluded Cockburn.
Webber's upcoming match against Warner University on Saturday, September 9, has been postponed due to expected inclement weather, and no make-up date has yet to be announced. The Warriors will host University of the Virgin Islands at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13.
