LAKE WALES, Fla. (September 30, 2017) – The Webber International University men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and seemed to be on its way to its first win in The Sun Conference this season, but the Warriors were done in by two second-half goals by Warner University during a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Royals on Saturday night at Royals Field.
The Warriors struck first with a one timer by
Brandon Byrne off a nice corner kick from
Diachi Arahara less than nine minutes into the match. After Warner answered four minutes later, Webber scored again to take its second lead of the half as Byrne launched a ball down the sideline that found
Robert Green streaking past his defender and past the Royals' goalkeeper, Miguel Ardilla, for a goal with less than two and a half minutes left before the intermission
However, the Royals wasted no time grabbing the momentum back in the second half as Ranier De Jesus assisted on back-to-back goals from Renzo Montaiuti and Billy Cundall in the 47th and 50th minutes.
Webber (2-4 overall, 0-3 TSC) outshout Warner (3-2-3, 2-1-1) 9-3 in the first half and had chances to tie the match in the second as Ardilla had to make five second-half saves to help the Royals maintain their advantage.
"This was by far the best performance we have had all season," said Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "Unfortunatley we were not rewarded with a win, which happens. You really have to give it to Warner. They played extremely hard and with a lot of passion, and they are doing a great job over there."
Byrne, Green, Arahara,
Charlie Lambert,
Armani D'Agostino and
Sam Todd each finished with two shots for Webber.
Next up, Webber starts off October with more TSC action at Ave Maria University on Wednesday, October 4, at 1 p.m., followed by a match at Southeastern University a week later at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11.
