Men’s soccer battles back to tie Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (October 4, 2017) – Senior Juan Pablo Zambrano scored with only 21 seconds left on the clock in regulation as the Webber International University men's soccer team completed a late comeback to force overtime and ultimately settle with a 2-2 tie at Ave Maria University on Wednesday at AMU Soccer Field.

On what was a very windy afternoon, Ave Maria took a 2-0 lead with a goal only three minutes in and another in the final minute in the first half.

The Warriors, however, would rally in the second half as Noel Omondi found Charlie Lambert for a goal in the 60th minute to get Webber on the board.

The 2-1 score then remained until the very final minute of regulation with Zambrano scored on a goal that was deflected around before ultimately finding the back of the net.

Neither team was able to net a winning goal in the two 10-minute overtime frames as both goalkeepers, Webber's Randy Chesson and AMU's Andrea Salomone, had seven saves.

"It was another great effort from the boys again today, and yet we did not get the win," said Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "However, we are getting better and better with every game we play, and that is all I can ask."

Sam Todd led the offense with six shots for Webber while Lambert had three, and Omondi and Brandon Byrne each had two.

Webber's saw its record move to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria's moved to 1-6-3 and 0-2-2.

Next up, the Warriors will complete a three-match road trip by traveling to face a tough Southeastern University team on Wednesday, October 11, before returning to Warrior Field for Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 14, against SCAD Savannah.
