BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 3, 2017) – Freshman
Charlie Lambert and senior
Juan Pablo Zambrano both scored second-half goals en route to helping the Webber International University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bethany College in its 2017 season opener at Warrior Field.
The Warriors played like the more aggressive team from the opening touch, firing the first shot (by Lambert) less than 45 seconds into the season, and continued to put the pressure on the Swedes with 15 attempts in the first half, five of which were on goal and required athletic saves from Bethany's goalkeeper, Michael Wick.
The theme continued into the second half as Webber struck first when Lambert scored off of a penalty kick just over 10 minutes into the period. Then, with 15:46 left to play,
Sam Todd found Zambrano right in front of the goal for a header to make it 2-0 Warriors.
The Swedes, however, hung around and kept things interesting. Bethany had an opportunity to cut the lead in half just over a minute and a half after Zambrano's goal as keeper
Randy Chesson was forced to make a save while lying on the ground.
The Swedes broke through with under nine minutes left as CJ Lewis scored after receiving the pass from a free kick, but the Webber defense held tough and did not allow the Swedes another clean look at the goal.
That same Webber defense held Bethany to only eight total shots, four in each half, with the Warriors' offense fired 23 shots, with 11 going on goal.
Head Coach
Neil Cockburn spoke on the win, "Our boys showed a lot of heart, and I am very happy with players that stepped up from JV, such as
Andrew Stella. The boys are getting better every day."
Noel Omondi led the Warriors with six shots, while Todd had five and
Aldo Lopez had four.
After a recent schedule change, the Warriors will now open their 2017 campaign with seven straight home matches. Webber will welcome Trinity Baptist College to Warrior Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Tuesday, September 5.
