MONTGOMERY, Ala. (September 30, 2017) – The introduction into the Sun Division of the Mid-South Athletic Conference started with a loss for the Webber International University football team, which fell to Faulkner University by a score of 48-21 on Saturday at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
After a one-sided first half in which Faulkner led 34-0 at the break, the second half was much more even, but in the end, the Eagles' big lead was too much for the Warriors to overcome.
For the third consecutive game, junior
Garry Chouloute led Webber in both passing and rushing yards as he racked up 233 yards through the air and 46 on the ground. Chouloute was also responsible for all three of the Warriors' touchdowns as he connected with freshman
Jalen Cayo on a four-yard pass midway through the third quarter to get Webber on the board, found
Christian Acevedo for a one-yard score early in the fourth quarter, and then ran the ball in from nine yards out with only seven seconds left in the game.
Two Webber wide outs named Jeremiah also finished with big days as
Jeremiah Harris hauled in 11 passes for 101 yards, and
Jeremiah Lucas made five catches for 52 yards. Senior
Austin Logue finished with 38 yards on 10 carries out of the backfield.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Tyson Burch led the team with eight tackles while
Chase Sams added seven for his second straight strong performance.
Shaunski Lawrence also added seven tackles while
Dequan Harvin had four tackles and made his first interception of the season with a 22-yard return. Overall, Faulkner committed five turnovers as
Tequavious Barnes recorded his second interception of the year, and freshman linebacker
Cory Cotnoir forced the first fumble of his career and made his first career sack.
Acevedo also had a strong day on kickoff returns as he returned four kicks for 116 yards.
Webber's record fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the division in 2017, while Faulkner saw its record raise to 3-2 and 1-0.
With only four games remaining, Webber will enjoy an off week before returning home to Legion Field as the Warriors look to earn their first-ever win in the Sun Division. The Warriors will battle Edward Waters College on Saturday, October 14, at 1:30 p.m. in Lake Wales, Florida.
