LAKE WALES, Fla. (September 2, 2017) – For the Webber International University football team, defense has been its calling card early on in the 2017 season. One week after only allowing 10 points, the Warriors defense suffocated St. Andrews University from start to finish as Webber earned its first victory of the season, 3-0, over the Knights at Legion Field.
The Warriors defense forced five turnovers, held St. Andrews to only six first downs the entire game, and limited the Knights passing attack to only 45 yards on three completions. Webber's offense, conversely, converted for 14 first downs and finished with 114 yards on the ground.
The deciding moment of the game was set up when
Tequavious Barnes intercepted a pass from St. Andrews' Keyshawn Brown at the Knight's 25-yard line and returned the ball down to the seven-yard line to set up a first-and-goal opportunity with 13 minutes left to play.
Two-minutes later,
Jalen Cayo reeled in a low snap and set it up for kicker
Marcus Mannerstedt to convert from 26 yards out on what was the only scoring play of the game.
"Defensively, our guys played a very good game," said Head Coach
Kelly Scott. "We really could not have asked for much more from the defense than what they gave us today. They executed the game plan with 100 percent buy in."
For the second straight game,
Tyson Burch led the Warriors with nine total tackles, and also forced two fumbles. Three other Warriors,
Keith Neal,
Cory Cotnoir and
Dequan Harvin, each added five tackles.
Austin Logue had a strong second half on the ground, finishing with 49 yards on 14 carries on the game, and
Timothy Miller was a target in the passing game all day, hauling in six passes for 41 yards.
"We still need to be more consistent all around on the offensive side of the ball," said Scott. "But, a win is a win, and although we are not as happy as we could be, we would rather have an ugly win than a loss."
Next up, Webber will travel to Lebanon, Tennessee, to battle Cumberland University in its first road game of the season. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 9.
