FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 18, 2017) – The Webber International University women's soccer team took a break from regular-season action to travel west to Fort Myers, Florida, and play at NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast University. The Warriors fell to the Eagles by a final score of 8-0 Monday night at the FGU Soccer Complex.
The star of the night for Webber was goalkeeper
Sarah McKinney, who made 13 saves on the match, but was the victim of a couple bad bounces and ricochets in the box on two goals in the first half.
"Sarah did an incredible job," said Head Women's Soccer Coach
Ashley Cockrell. "She made some really solid, textbook saves, and she kept our team organized the best she could. She really defended the goal and the whole 18, and we are so lucky to have her."
Playing against a FGCU team that has made the NCAA National Tournament each of the last three seasons and five out of the last six, the Warriors held the Eagles scoreless for over 20 minutes until a span of four goals in five minutes changed the face of the match.
Marianna Scine and
Luiza Oliveira were the lone shot takers on the night for Webber.
"I am really proud of our team," continued Cockrell. "They faced a huge challenge tonight, one that many teams might have shied away from, but they battled for a full 90 minutes, and that is what we ask of them every single night."
Webber remains 2-0 on the season while FGCU saw its record raise to 7-2.
Next up, Webber will return to regular-season action with the start of The Sun Conference play. The Warriors will travel to Florida Memorial University on Wednesday, September 20, and then host rival Warner University on Saturday, September 23.
