LAKE WALES, Fla. (August 26, 2017) – The Warriors jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after just their second drive of the game, but were unable to add to their point total the rest of the way as the Webber International University football team fell to Point University, 10-7, in their 2017 season opener at Legion Field.
The Warriors looked good early as the offense ran at least nine plays in each of their two first-quarter drives, culminating in a one-yard touchdown rush for
Nathan Johnson to cap a 14-play, 79-yard drive with 1:28 left in the opening quarter.
The defense helped Webber hold onto the lead as
Isaiah Cromarty and
Junior Lewis came up with interceptions on back-to-back possessions, but ultimately the lack of offense caught up to the Warriors as Point's Derek Bellard connected with Darius Blackmon for a 15-yard score just over five minutes into the second half. The Skyhawks then connected on a field goal from 29 yards out to start the fourth quarter.
The Warriors had a chance to tie or retake the lead as a 17-yard pass by
Garry Chouloute to
Jeremiah Harris set up a fourth-and-three opportunity from the Skyhawks' 11-yard line with just over 11 minutes left to play. The Warriors, however, elected to run for it instead of opting for the field goal, and ultimately turned the ball over on downs.
Head Coach
Kelly Scott reiterated his confidence in going for it on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal.
"I want our guys to be confident that we can pick up three yards when we need to, and there were lots of fourth-down stops on both sides today, so I am sure both coaches will go back and look at things a little bit," said Scott.
After a two-hour-and-ten-minute rain delay midway through the final quarter, Webber's final chance came as an eight-yard rush by Johnson set the Warriors up at first-and-10 on their own 46 before being backed up to a fourth-and-35 to end the threat.
Freshman
Cameron Wakefield was one of the bright spots for Webber as he rushed for 79 yards on 20 carries. Defensively,
Tyson Burch led the way with eight total tackles, and
Dequan Harvin added two tackles for loss and a sack.
"I thought our freshman running back [Wakefield] did a great job and really stuck his nose in there," said Scott. "We will still need to sure up our running game in hopes of opening up the passing game, but I saw a lot of good things on that front today. It is always darkest before light. Overall, I thought out kids really played hard, but obviously we need to cleanup a few things, and that is what we will hunker down and try to accomplish this week."
Webber will only have a week to prepare before it looks to rebound during a second home game as the Warriors will host St. Andrews University on Saturday, September 2, at 1:30 p.m. on Legion Field.
