FAULKNER, Ala. (August 19, 2017) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team swept Brenau University and Faulkner University to finish the opening weekend of its 2017 season with a 3-1 record. Webber defeated Brenau 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-13) in the morning before coming back in the afternoon to defeat tournament host Faulkner University 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-17) at Tine Davis Gymansium.
In the morning session against Brenau, the Warriors rolled to victory using seven straight points in the first set to take a 16-8 lead. The Warriors would then close out the second set on a 12-2 run and finished the match on a 12-3 run.
In the second match, Webber handed Faulkner its first loss of the young season as
Carlee Baxter had a well-rounded performance with 28 assists, eight kills and eight digs. Virginia Sagapolu added 12 digs and a match-high nine kills, and
Michelle Calderon came up big defensively with 17 digs.
Baxter also dished 33 helpers in the first match against Brenau and finished the tournament with an average of 8.8 assists per set. Calderon led the Warriors in digs in all four matches as she added 14 against Brenau.
Next up, the Warriors will travel to Columbia, Kentucky and the campus of Lindsey Wilson College for the Southeastern Challenge on Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2, as Webber will get four more matches under its belt before its first home match.
