Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vaughn’s 29 not enough as men’s basketball falls to Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (December 9, 2017) – The Warriors trailed by as much as 19 in the second half before the Webber International University men's basketball team made it a game in the final minutes, but in the end, Webber fell to the College of Coastal Georgia, 81-71, on Saturday at Coffin Gym.

For the second Saturday in a row, senior guard Osandai Vaughn was terrific for the Warriors. One week after leading the team with 30 points at Warner University (Dec. 2), Vaughn scored 29 on Saturday against the Mariners. He was 12-for-19 from the field and added three 3-pointers.

The first half of action was very tight throughout as neither team led by more than five points until within the final minute of the period. It was a two-point game with 1:16 remaining in the first half as Vaughn sank two free throws to make it 31-29 Mariners, but from there, Coastal Georgia scored seven straight points, including two on a buzzer beating layup, to take a nine-point lead into the break at 38-29.

After Vaughn and Tommie Luke produced the bulk of the scoring for Webber last week at Warner, Vaughn and Nikita Orap carried the early load for the Warriors this time around as the duo combined for 23 of Webber's 29 points at halftime. Vaughn had 14 at the break while Orap had nine.

In the first few minutes of the second half on Saturday, Coastal Georgia went on a 12-2 run to take a 19-point lead at 50-31. After falling behind by 19 for a second time with 12 and a half minutes left, Webber began to creep back into it as Garrett Woodmansee connected on a 3-pointer and then Johnathan Childs made a free throw to bring the score to 63-50 with nine and a half minutes to go.

Next, the Warriors got their deficit down to 12 at 73-61 with 4:43 remaining after two free throws by Orap and a tough contested jumper by Vaughn in the lane. It then became an eight-point game after a steal and a layup by Nicholas Blocker, followed by an acrobatic layup by Vaughn to make it 74-66 with 2:17 on the clock.

Lastly, the Warriors then cut it to seven at 76-69 as Vaughn hit a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to cap a 12-3 Webber run, but that was the closet the Warriors would get.

"I really liked out defensive effort tonight," said Head Coach Allen Corbin. "We worked on that end all week and really saw improvements. We must get better at taking care of the ball and making decisions in order to win."

Orap and Luke both finished with 11 points while Orap led the way on the boards with eight. Blocker and Austin Evans both added five points while Blocker also had six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Webber's record fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in The Sun Conference while Coastal Georgia's rose to 8-5 and 2-4.

The Warriors will be back at it on Wednesday, December 13, in more TSC action as Webber squares off against Thomas University in a home-away-from-home matchup at the Turner Athletic Center on the campus of Warner University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. for the men.
