BOCA RATON, Fla. (December 10, 2017) – Less than 24 hours after battling the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia, the Webber International University men's basketball team traveled south to Boca Raton, Florida, to square off against Florida Atlantic University in its final exhibition game of the 2017-18 season. The Warriors fell to FAU by a score of 106-46 on Sunday inside FAU Arena.
Johnathan Childs scored nine points to lead Webber while
Garrett Woodmansee was next with eight and
Tommie Luke had six. Four Warriors (
Shaquille Williams,
Nicholas Blocker,
Obi Romeo and Georges Dorvilien) added five points. Additionally, Romeo led the team in rebounds with eight.
Coming into the game on Sunday, common opponents between the Warriors and the Owls were Edward Waters College, which FAU defeated by 32 early in the season, and Florida Gulf Coast University, which was defeated by FAU by four in a high-scoring affair on Dec. 5. Webber's record remained at 3-5 on the season due to the exhibition, while FAU's rose to 6-3.
Sunday's result represented the fourth game in a row that the Owls scored 90 plus points (school record). Additionally, the 60-point margin of victory for FAU was the largest in school history.
Romeo got Webber on the board with a put back lay-in, and then a score by
Austin Evans made it 10-4. After a 10-0 FAU run, Childs connected on a jumper and then scored again a few possessions later to make it 23-8.
After the Owls, who started the game 5-of-5 from 3-point range, connected on their sixth three of the opening half, Childs answered with a three of his own to make it 32-11, and then Woodmansee converted on three straight free throw attempts to make it 34-14.
A basket from Romeo off the assist from
Rasheem Etienne made it 38-16 before FAU led 43-16 with eight minutes left in the first half. To that point, the Owls were 7-of-10 from three while Webber was only 1-of-9. However, Webber began to get it going a little bit as Woodmansee and Williams both connected from long range and Dorvilien found the bottom of the net on a long 2-point jumper to bring the score to 57-25.
At the half, Webber trailed by 38 and was only 3-of-13 from three and 9-of-30 from the field while FAU was 50 percent (9-18) from three and 58.7 percent (27-46) from the field.
