Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vaughn’s, Luke’s huge efforts not enough in high-scoring affair against No. 24 Royals

LAKE WALES, Fla. (December 2, 2017) – Senior Osandai Vaughn and freshman Tommie Luke put on a show for the Warrior faithful in attendance, but in the end it would not be enough for the Webber International University men's basketball team lost to No. 24 Warner University, 97-85, inside a packed Turner Athletic Center on Saturday.

The duo of Vaughn and Luke combined for 58 of Webber's 85 points, and Johnathan Childs added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Vaughn would finish with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting on four 3-point makes. Luke, finished with 28 points on 9-of-14 field goals, was 2-for-2 from three, and had an 8-for-11 mark from the free throw line.

Early in the matchup, Webber (3-4 overall, 1-2 The Sun Conference) held early leads of 10-4 and 12-8 as Vaughn got off to a blistering hot start. The senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, connected on a 3-pointer on each of Webber's first two possessions of the game and accounted for 12 of Webber's first 17 points in the game through a little bit over seven minutes of action.

At the 10-minute mark in the first half, Webber fell behind by five at 24-19 after only shooting 33 percent from the field at that point, and then the Royals took an 11-point lead at 35-24 after three throws with 6:56 on the clock.

Webber got back to within three at 37-34 with just under four minutes left before the intermission, but from there, Warner (8-3, 3-1) closed the frame on an 11-7 run to grab a seven-point advantage. At the half, Vaughn led both teams with 16 points while the two teams combined for only five turnovers. Also in the first half, Warner shot nearly 50 percent from the field and was over 40 percent from three.

The second half became the Vaughn and Luke show for Webber as they combined for 34 of Webber's 45 points in the period.

The Warriors trailed the entire second period but Luke and Vaughn tried their best to keep it close until Warner scored 12 straight points late in the game to take control for good.

A 3-pointer by Luke followed by a fast break layup from Vaughn made the score 50-46, and then a steal and another layup from Vaughn followed by a midrange, fast break jumper by Luke made it 56-50 with around 16 minutes left to play.

Another 3-pointer by Luke then made it 59-55, and then a steal and a dunk by Luke around the 12:45 mark made it 67-59 as he tried to keep the Warriors hopes' alive.

Luke then got loose for another dunk, this time a strong right-handed finish on another fast break to make the score 79-75 with over six minutes left before Warner scored 12 straight to jump ahead at 91-75 and all but finish the game off.

Vaughn added six rebounds and three steals in the game while Luke added five boards and two steals. Austin Evans scored six points in his TSC debut, and Joseph Serrano finished with four points and five assists.

Webber will next play at the College of Coastal Georgia at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, in Brunswick, Georgia.
