BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 19, 2017) – The Webber International University women's basketball team got back into the win column for the second time in three games as it came out with a 70-60 win over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Tuesday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber's record rose to 4-9 on the year while Saint Ambrose fell to 4-11.
Webber was led in scoring by
Ashley Perry with a game-high 18 points, followed by
RayGene Garner with 16,
Jakia Davis with 10, and three others with six. Three Warriors (
Emmarrie Carmen,
Tiffany Zito, Perry) tied for the team-high in rebounding with seven, while
Breyonna Reed was great with eight assists and three steals. Perry also added three steals while Davis and Zito each added two.
The Warriors led by as many as five points in the first quarter and seven in the second, but also trailed by as many as five in the second before going into the locker room at halftime down by only two at 33-31. The end of each of the first two quarters featured late heroics from the Warriors as Garner hit a long 3-pointer from nearly half court with the buzzer sounding to end the first quarter, and then
Montrese Weller hit a late 3-pointer of her own to close out the second quarter.
Despite allowing the Bees to shoot 46.7 percent in the opening half, Webber was able to keep it close thanks to holding Saint Ambrose to only a 1-for-7 mark from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes while connecting on four 3-pointers themselves, two each from Garner and Weller.
In the third quarter, Webber led by six (39-33) halfway through but then trailed by eight (51-43) late as the game was about as back-and-forth as one can be.
Similarly to each of the first two quarters, Webber again scored late in the third as
Abby Unis finished on a layup with only two seconds left.
Trailing by nine (55-46) with 7:15 left in the game, the Warriors went on an 11-0 run to a take back the lead at 57-55 after a layup by Davis with 3:36 on the clock. The run was actually part of a larger 21-3 run for Webber that made it 67-58 with only 1:25 left as Perry scored on a layup. Additionally, the shift in the fourth quarter for Webber was keyed by added full court defensive pressure for the Warriors, resulting in 11 turnovers for Saint Ambrose and eight steals for Webber during the final seven minutes of action.
"Head Coach
Grady Morrell had this to say, "For the final seven minutes of the game, our press defense and our zone offense went hand-in-hand, and that is what keyed the victory."
Similarly to its last two contests, each of Webber's next two games will come on back-to-back days as the Warriors host Montreat College (N.C.) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, and then host Reinhardt University, also at 6 p.m., on Friday, December 29.
