BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 28, 2017) – In its first game since returning from Christmas Break, the Webber International University women's basketball team took down Montreat College 66-50 on Thursday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber's record rose to 5-9 with what was its second straight win while Montreat's record fell to 3-9 after its sixth straight loss.
It was a balanced effort for the Warriors as all 10 players that entered the game for Webber scored at least three points and grabbed at least three rebounds or dished three assists.
Ashley Perry finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals while
RayGene Garner also reached 11 points and added four rebounds and three steals.
Montrese Weller scored 10 points with four rebounds,
Breyonna Reed scored eight points with four assists, and
Jakia Davis added six points and four rebounds.
Other standouts in the rebounding column for Webber were
Emmarrie Carmen with a team high of eight and
Tiffany Zito with six. In all, the Warriors out-rebounded Montreat 46-32, including 18-6 on the offensive glass, leading to an 11-3 advantage in second chance points.
Webber also grabbed 15 steals on the night and outscored Montreat 21-13 in points off turnovers, and the Warriors also won the points in the paint battle 34-18.
Webber was able to get off to a good start in the first quarter thanks to shooting 50 percent from the field in the frame to take a nine-point advantage at 20-11 as
Shayla McPhearson scored on a jumper with only a couple of seconds remaining in the period. The Warriors then struggled from the field in the second quarter (23.1 percent) but still managed to outscore the Cavaliers thanks to converting on 9-of-12 free throw attempts.
After entering the final quarter leading by 11 at 54-43, the Warriors sealed the win with a very strong defensive effort, holding Montreat to only one field goal (1-17; 5.9 percent) and only seven points in the period.
Next up, Webber will host another team from the Appalachian Athletic Conference for the second straight night as Reinhardt University makes its way to Babson Park. The Warriors and the Eagles will tipoff at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 29.
Reinhardt, which has been ranked as high as No. 18 so for this season, will enter the matchup with a 10-3 record after playing two familiar opponents to the Warriors in its last two games. The Eagles fell to NAIA Division-I Lindsey Wilson College by three on December 12 and then rebounded to defeat No. 20 the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) by 24 its last time out on December 15.
