Warriors struggle to score in loss to No. 20 Cougars

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 18, 2017) – The first of back-to-back home games on back-to-back days against Midwestern schools for the Webber International University women's basketball team did not start on a positive note as the Warriors lost to No. 20 the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), 64-43, on Monday morning at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

The Warriors ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run and trailed by only five points (16-11) after one quarter before being held to single digits in the second quarter and heading into the intermission trailing by 12 (31-19).

Webber shot only 27 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and was only 12.5 percent from the 3-point range. However, where the Warriors really struggled was from the free throw line. Webber was only 6-of-14 (42 percent) in the first half and 7-of-11 (63 percent) in the second half to finish at 52 percent (13-25) overall from the line.

Starting with two minutes left in the third quarter, Webber scored eight straight points, capped by a fast break layup from RayGene Garner 15 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it a 13-point deficit at 46-33. From there, Saint Francis answered with eight straight points of its own to go ahead by 21 (54-33) for the second time in the game, this time with just under five minutes remaining.

Jakia Davis led Webber in scoring with seven points while Breyonna Reed, Emmarrie Carmen and Garner each had six. Shayla McPhearson tied for the game-high in rebounds with seven while Abby Unis had six.

Webber fell to 3-9 on the season while Saint Francis' record rose to 8-5.

Next up, Webber will host Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, before taking over a week off from action for Christmas break.
