Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors’ comeback attempt falls just short

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 18, 2017) – After trailing by as many as 15 points early in the second half, the Webber International University men's basketball team battled all the way back to make it a two-point game before falling to Grace College (Ind.), 92-90, on Monday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (4-6) trailed 13-0 to start the game, was down by 19 in the final minute of the first half, trailed by 15 at the intermission and was down again by 15 at 55-40 a little bit over two minutes into the second half.

The Warriors, however, decided to show up and made it a game in the second half, using an 11-4 run to get the margin back to within single digits at 59-51 with 15 minutes left to play.

Down 10 at 72-62 with 9:40 remaining, Webber scored eight straight points over a three-minute span to make it 72-70 with six minutes left.

Grace (7-8), answered with a 10-1 run to open the game back up to an 11-point margin at 82-71 with 2:49 left, but the Warriors continued to chip away in the final two minutes.

Johnathan Childs scored on a layup and made two free throws to make the score 84-77 with 1:18 left, but a missed layup for the Warriors with 47 seconds left halted an opportunity to get within five points of the Lancers, who quickly widened their lead back to 10 at 87-77 with only 35 seconds to go.

Two fast break scores by Joseph Serrano made it a seven-point game again with 21 seconds left, and then two 3-pointers by Osandai Vaughn made it a three-point game at 90-87 with only 4.7 seconds to go.

Webber attempted to come up with a steal in the final moments, but was forced to foul and send Grace to the line where it converted on two free throws before Nikita Orap hit a 3-pointer with the buzzer sounding to finish off the theatrics.

Overall, Grace was 8-for-11 on free throws in the final minute of action.

"We didn't show up to play in the first 10 minutes of the game," said Head Coach Allen Corbin. "It is difficult to win when you spot a team 13 points. After we got going, I thought we did a lot of positive things, and I hope that we learn from this and grow both on and off the floor."

After Grace shot 61 percent from the field in the first 12 minutes in the game, Webber tightened up a little bit and held the Lancers to 43.3 percent shooting in the second half while shooting over 61 percent from the field themselves and going 50 percent from three and nearly 90 percent from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes. The Warriors also outscored Grace in points off turnovers (11-8), second chance points (18-15), points in the paint (58-46) and fast break points (22-6).

Additionally, Webber's resurgence in the second half was keyed by 18 points and five rebounds from Vaughn, 15 points with five rebounds by Childs, eight points by Tommie Luke, seven from Serrano and six from Orap.

In all, Vaughn finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field and three 3-pointers on 50 percent shooting from three, and was also one rebound shy of a double-double while adding four assists and two steals. Childs set a season-high with 22 points (8-12 from the field; 6-7 from foul line) and had seven rebounds, while Serrano finished with a season-high 13 points (6-8 from the field) and Obi Romeo had six boards and one huge block.

Next up, Webber will remain at home to play its final game of 2017 as the Warriors welcome Huntington University (Ind.) to Babson Park, Florida. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, December 19, as the Warriors will then not return to the court until the New Year in January.
