BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 19, 2017) – For the second night in a row, senior
Osandai Vaughn was only one rebound shy of a double-double as he teamed up with freshman
Tommie Luke to help lead the Webber International University men's basketball team to a well-deserved win over Huntington University (Ind.), 87-78, on Tuesday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
After scoring 24 points and grabbing nine rebounds on Monday night (Dec. 18) against Grace College, Vaughn followed that up with a 28-point, nine-rebound performance on 11-of-19 shooting on Tuesday. Vaughn was also 3-for-6 from 3-point range for the second night in a row, and also added three assists and was one of five Warriors with three or more helpers on the evening.
Helping Vaughn out in the scoring column was Luke, who finished with 24 points, 14 of which came in the second half, and four assists.
Johnathan Childs added 15 points with seven rebounds and three blocks;
Joseph Serrano had seven points, four assists and three steals; and
Austin Evans had eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to go along with four points.
Webber got off to a strong start offensively and never slowed down. The Warriors held a seven-point lead at 17-10 seven minutes in while shooting over 70 percent from the field to that point. With 11:22 left in the first half, Webber's fourth 3-pointer of the game to that point, this one by Childs, made it an eight-point game, 22-14, in the Warriors' favor.
At the intermission, Webber led by four (41-37), and remained hot from the field at 55.2 percent and from 3-point range at 66.7 percent.
In all, Webber would never trail in the game as a fast break dunk by Luke, assisted by Serrano, made it a 20-point game at 74-54 with 7:20 remaining. However, similarly to how the Warriors made it close against Grace on Monday night, Huntington made things interesting in the final two minutes as a big run by the Foresters made it 82-76 with 1:40 left.
From there, Childs scored on a dunk and with 1:08 left and converted again with only 36 seconds left to make it a 10-point margin at 86-76 and seal the win for the Warriors.
By the end of the game, Webber was still shooting over 50 percent both from the field (53.8%) and from 3-point range (52.9%).
"I am very proud of our team tonight," said Head Coach
Allen Corbin. "We battled and executed on both ends for 40 minutes. I see growth mentally and physically, and that's all we can ask for. I am really excited to see what these guys can do after the New Year."
With the win, Webber's record rose to 5-6 overall on the season while Huntington's fell to 6-8.
The Warriors will not return to action until the New Year when they host No. 18 Saint Thomas University at 7:30 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center on Thursday, January 4.
