Women’s basketball grinds out first conference win of 2017-18

LAKE WALES, Fla. (December 13, 2017) – The last opportunity for the Webber International University women's basketball team to earn a Sun Conference victory in the 2017 portion of its 2017-18 season was a successful venture as the Warriors defeated Thomas University 65-59 on Wednesday night at Turner Athletic Center on the campus of Warner University.

The game still counted as a home game for Webber (3-8 overall, 1-4 TSC) after it was moved from its original location inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Thomas' record fell to 4-4 and 2-4.

The Warriors saw four players reach double figures in scoring as Emmarrie Carmen scored 14, RayGene Garner had 13, Ashley Perry had 12 and Breyonna Reed had 11. Shayla McPhearson dished out four assists and had five steals while Reed added four steals, Carmen had three steals, and Perry had two blocks. Tiffany Zito pitched in with eight points and six rebounds to match Perry for the team-high on the boards.

A big reason for Webber being able to get over the hump on Wednesday and earn its first conference win of the season was its stellar shooting percentage in the second half. The Warriors finished the second half shooting over a 53-percent clip after shooting 36 percent in the first half.

With the two teams all tied up at halftime, the Warriors started the second half with a 15-2 run over the first 4:18 of clock time to take a big 13-point lead at 42-29.

Carmen accounted for nine of Webber's first 15 points in the second half, and then Garner connected on two free throws to give the Warriors a 17-point lead (53-36) with less than 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

With 5:12 left to play, Webber went ahead by 21 (61-40) as Zito scored, but from there, the Night Hawks scored 11 straight points to make it a 10-point game with two and a half minutes remaining.

Thomas would go on to cut its deficit to eight (62-54) after a fast break layup by De'Audra Copeland with 35 seconds left, and then made it a seven-point game at 63-56 after another fast break layup by Copeland with only 17 seconds to go.

Reed would convert on two free throw attempts for Webber with 13 seconds on the clock to put the game out of reach.

The Warriors will return to action, hopefully back on their real home court, on Monday, December 18, to host the 20th-ranked team in the country, the University of Saint Francis, and will then host Saint Ambrose University the following day, Tuesday, December 19.
