Women’s basketball drops low-scoring affair in season opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 6, 2017) – Newcomer RayGene Garner finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in her debut in a Warrior uniform, but in the end the Webber International University women's basketball team fell to Edward Waters College by a score of 54-45 on Monday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

It was a sloppy game overall as the two teams missed many layups and easy-scoring opportunities, both shot under 25 percent for the game, and both finished under 34 percent from three-point range

One of the key differences in the game came in the form of the two team's number of made free throws as Webber (0-1) finished 13-of-20 from the line while Edward Waters (6-1) was 24-of-35.

Both teams got off to a very slow start in the first quarter, combing to make only five field goals in the period while committing a combined 15 turnovers. That theme continued into the second quarter as the teams combined for only six field goals and 13 turnovers, but the Warriors were able to hang close, only trailing by four at the intermission at 19-15.

The third quarter is where the Warriors for a moment, seemed to turn things around and hit their stride. Webber opened the frame on a 9-0 run, capped by a three from Garner just under four minutes into the third, to put Webber ahead by five at 24-19.

Over the next five minutes, however, the Tigers responded with a big run of their own, this time a 12-0 run featuring eight made free throws to give Edward Waters a lead at 31-24, an advantage it would not relinquish.

Webber got to within three in the final moments of the third quarter as Paris Copeland scored a layup to make it 31-28, and then a 3-pointer with just under seven minutes left in the game made it a one-point margin at 37-36. The Tigers, however, quickly grew their lead back to eight at 44-36 with only four minutes left after a 7-0 run over a nearly three-minute span. Webber never got any closer than within six points the rest of the way.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Grady Morrell said, "We played hard and like you might expect out of a first game. If we cut down on turnovers and finish at the bucket, we will be a good ball club."

In addition to Garner's game-high in both points and rebounds, and a game-high three 3-pointers, Ashely Perry added nine points and six rebounds, while Breyonna Reed finished with seven rebounds and Emmarrie Carmen had six. Tiffany Zito returns for her senior season as she finished with five rebounds, as did Shayla McPhearson, and Abby Unis made her Webber debut, also finishing with five rebounds while adding three blocks.

Next up, Webber will begin a four-game road trip by heading to Carver College in Atlanta, Georgia, for a 6 p.m. game time on Wednesday, November 8.
