Huge fourth quarter not enough as women’s basketball suffers season sweep vs. EWC

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 30, 2017) – The Warriors scored 31 points in the fourth quarter in an attempt to complete an epic comeback, but in the end, a 28-point deficit would be too much too overcome for the Webber International University women's basketball team as it lost to Edward Waters College for the second time on the season, this time by a score of 69-58 on Thursday night.

Webber (2-6), was defeated in its season opener at home by Edward Waters (10-1) by nine (54-45) back on November 6, and the month ended similarly for the Warriors on Thursday as they won the fourth quarter, but could not finish off the comeback attempt.

The Warriors were held to single digits in both the second and third quarters as EWC built up its lead to 12 at halftime (30-18) and to 27 three times in the third quarter.

Trailing by 28 (58-30) with 9:16 on the clock, Webber got all the way to within eight points of the Tigers at 63-55 with just over two minutes remaining. The huge 25-5 run for the Warriors featured points from seven different players as Emmarrie Carmen, Ashley Perry, RayGene Garner and Tiffany Zito each contributed four points during the stretch.

However, Webber would get no closer the rest of the way after back-to-back scores by EWC made it 67-55 with 1:20 left. Montrese Weller would score with 1:03 left to make it 67-57, and then Breyonna Reed made a free throw to finish the scoring off with 43 seconds left as Webber outscored the Tigers 31-15 in the final quarter.

Reed would finish leading the team in scoring with 11 points while adding four steals, and Zito and Carmen both added 10 points. Perry finished with a game-high eight rebounds while Garner added seven, Zito and Abby Unis both had six, and Jakia Davis had five as the Warriors out-rebounded the Tigers 49-35.

Weller was responsible for the lone 3-point make of the night for Webber. As a team, the Warriors committed 31 turnovers with resulted in 24 points off of turnovers for the Tigers. Webber was hampered by 29 turnovers in its first meeting of the season with Edward Waters.

Next up, Webber will head into the halfway point of a stretch that watches the Warriors play on three days in a row. Webber will play in an exhibition game at NCAA Division-I Stetson University (broadcasted on ESPN3) at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 1, and then plays at Warner University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 in Sun Conference action. Each of the first 100 Webber students in attendance on Saturday at Warner, with a valid Webber ID, will receive free admittance.
