DELAND, Fla. (December 1, 2017) – The Webber International University women's basketball team wrapped up the exhibition portion of its 2017-18 season with a 67-30 defeat at NCAA Division-I Stetson University on Friday at the Edmunds Center.
Webber (3-3) actually got off to a great start early in the game as
RayGene Garner connected on a jumper to give the Warriors an eight-point lead at 14-6 with 4:50 left in the opening quarter; however, that would be the final points of the period for Webber. Additionally, it was the third basket of the opening five plus minutes for Garner as she scored nine of Webber's 14 first-quarter points.
About 10 minutes later,
Abby Unis scored the final basket of the second quarter for Webber to make it 24-22 Stetson (5-4) with 4:45 left before halftime.
However, the Hatters went on to score seven straight to close out the first half with a nine-point lead, and then held the Warriors to only one basket, a layup by
Ashley Perry at the 8:30 mark, in the third quarter. In all, Webber went 12 minutes without scoring in the second half as the Hatters went on a 27-0 run en route to outscoring the Warriors 24-2 in the third quarter and 36-8 over the final 20 minutes.Â
Garner would go on to finish with a team-high 11 points and added seven rebounds, Unis added five points and eight boards,
Breyonna Reed also had five points, and Perry reached double-digits in rebounds with 10 and added three steals.
Webber was held to only 10 percent shooting from the field in the second half, and was only nine percent from three and 20 percent from the free throw line during the final 20 minutes.
Next up, the Warriors will square off against Sun Conference foe Warner University at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, December 2, in Lake Wales, Florida. The first 100 Webber students in attendance with a valid student ID will get into the game for free.
