Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Woodmansee hits five 3-pointers in exhibition against FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. (November 29, 2017) – The Webber International University men's basketball team traveled to Fort Myers, Florida, on Wednesday to play Florida Gulf Coast University for its fifth exhibition game of the season. The Warriors lost to the Eagles by a score of 115-61 inside Alico Arena in the finale of the Homewood Suites FGCU Shootout.

Playing against what was arguably its toughest opponent all season, Webber (3-3) fell way behind very early against an FGCU (6-2) team that earned its second straight trip and third overall to the NCAA National Tournament a year ago.

Garrett Woodmansee finished the game with a team-high 15 points on five 3-pointers, all in the second half. Other Warriors in double figures were Johnathan Childs and Tommie Luke, both with 12 points.

The score was 20-0 exactly five minutes in, and was 27-0 before the Warriors scored their first bucket of the game on a layup by Joseph Serrano around the 12-minute mark in the first half.

Starting with Serrano's basket, Webber would go on to convert on each of its next three shot attempts, jumpers by Nicholas Blocker and Luke, after beginning the game 0-for-11 from the field with five turnovers. Conversely, FGCU shot 12-of-17 from the field during the first seven minutes plus, and lived up to its nickname, "Dunk City", with four strong dunks to get the large crowd involved.

Luke got it going a little bit a little over halfway through the first half as he scored on four of five Webber baskets, including a nifty reverse layup, to make the score 47-14 with just over six and a half minutes to go in the half.

A 3-pointer by Shaquille Williams made it 49-17 at the 5:42 mark in the first half, and then a pair of free throws and another basket for Jonathan Childs made it 57-21 with 2:19 on the clock.

By the end of the first half, Webber was 9-for-30 from the field overall, and was 1-for-9 from three with 12 turnovers. The Eagles finished the opening half 26-for-40 from the field with 20 assists and nine steals.

Luke finished with eight points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting, while Blocker and Childs both had four points at the intermission.

Webber began the second half on a 6-0 run as Rasheem Etienne got it started with a 3-pointer. A layup by Luke with 15:19 left to play made it a 33-point game at 71-38 as that was the closet Webber would get in the second half. Old high school teammates for the Warriors, Luke and Austin Evans, teamed up on a fast break alley-oop dunk with 7:46 on the scoreboard.

FGCU reached the 100-point mark on two free throws with 7:31 left to play, and then with just under seven minutes to go, Woodmansee connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the second half to make it 100-59.

At the 4:50 mark, Jonathan Childs cleaned up a missed layup by Luke with a strong tip dunk to make the score 105-61.

Next up, Webber will set its sights on Crooked Lake rival and the 25th-ranked team in the NAIA, Warner University. The Warriors and Royals will do battle at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, and each of the first 100 Webber students in attendance with a valid Webber ID will receive free admittance.
