BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 28, 2017) – A 3-pointer by
Shayla McPhearson brought the Warriors to within one point of the Gyrenes with under seven minutes left to play, but in the end, the Webber International University women's basketball team fell to Ave Maria University 72-62 on Monday evening at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber fell to 2-5 overall on the season and 0-2 in The Sun Conference, while Ave Maria remained unbeaten on the year at 8-0 and 2-0. The Gyrenes are matched with the Fire of Southeastern University (9-0) as the last two TSC teams unbeaten so far this season.
In Monday's game against the Gyrenes, Webber trailed by seven at 54-47 with 7:35 left in the game, but proceeded to go on an 8-2 run to draw within one at point 56-55 less than a minute later.
Paris Copeland provided a jump shot and a free throw to get the run started, and then McPhearson added back-to-back free throws followed by the 3-pointer that was assisted on by
Abby Unis.
However, that is where the Gyrenes went on a run of their own to widen the lead back to 11 (68-57), equaling their largest lead of the game, with only two minutes left. Sarah Miller accounted for nine of the Gyrenes' 12 points during the run as she finished with an impressive stat line of 26 points, 22 rebounds and four blocks.
Earlier in the contest, the Warriors lead for the majority of the second quarter and took a 33-31 lead into the intermission as Copeland netted a late jumper. Then, with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter, Webber matched its largest lead of the game at five (36-31) as
Ashley Perry scored on a layup.
With 3:47 remaining in the third quarter, Webber led 41-39 after McPhearson scored on a layup of her own, but from there, Ave Maria went on a 9-1 run to jump ahead by six with only a minute left in the frame.
Three Warriors reached double-digits in scoring as Copeland, a freshman from Lakeland, Florida, finished with a career-high 17 points; McPhearson, a senior from San Jose, California finished with a career-high 14 points; and
Montrese Weller, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, finished with 10 points on three 3-pointers.
McPhearson also added four steals while Perry finished with six points, six rebounds and four steals,
RayGene Garner had five points, five rebounds and two blocks, and Unis had four points and six rebounds.
Next up, the Warriors will be in action for three consecutive days before getting a week off as Webber plays at Edward Waters College at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, followed by an exhibition game at 11 a.m. against NCAA Division-I Stetson University on Friday, December 1, and culminating with a TSC matchup at Warner University on Saturday, December 2.
